knit.wear is back! Please join me in a highly demanded and joyful return to a most beloved title of the Interweave family. With its clean, sophisticated, and cerebral style, knit.wear allows me to venture into the other side of my aesthetic—the New Yorker side. For those who don’t know my backstory, I’ve spent most of my life between the mountains and rivers of the Hudson Valley and the imposing skyline of New York City. The Anna Cowl by Sarah Wilson (page 76) begins with a provisional cast-on, a type of cast-on that leaves the loops at the base of the cast-on row live (open) so they can be used again (either by working another piece in the opposite direction from the first piece or by joining the cast-on loops to other live loops using a three-needle bind-off or grafting). In this case, the live loops at the top of the cowl (the last row worked) were grafted to the live loops at the base of the provisional cast-on row to join the cowl into a seamless circle. Designers are often asked what inspires them. For me, it has been a hard question to answer. However, because inspiration is integral to the work that designers do, I wanted to have an answer. Inspiration is, in fact, our starting point. Without it, we would have no voice, no vision. We would look out and, seeing no horizon, be absolutely lost in space. Sometimes all it takes is a mixture of plain knit and purl stitches to make a pretty, yet practical, pattern. Add a simple lace stitch and you get a sweet, old-fashioned design perfect for a cozy cowl. Worked in the round with an easy lace stitch, this pattern is suitable for new lace knitters or a good social knit for a seasoned knitter who wants to catch up with friends rather than focus on stitches. Louisa is a vintage name for a cowl with a vintage feel, and its namesake is one of my favorite classic novelists, Louisa May Alcott.
