Where did it go wrong with Mikhail Gorbachev after a wonderful contribution in his country and the countries the Soviet Union was assisting, especially in their liberation struggles?
In supporting other countries, he was carrying on where his predecessors left off. In the eyes of many, all of Gorbachev’s predecessors were conservative. Maybe Nikita Khrushchev was better. That is, of course, in the eyes of the West, capitalists, imperialists, and reactionaries, retrogressive oppressors and their surrogates.
One might have differed with the approach of the Eastern bloc, especially its leader, and the Soviet Union’s approach in international politics. But one needs to know that there was a Cold War. Both sides, West and East, had interests to protect. Those differences were centred on ideology, West (imperialism) and East (communism).
