For over a decade, millions of bees have been flying away from their hives, never to return. Scientists believe the bees are dying during these trips, and they say there are many possible causes for the deaths. One is a particular pest—the varroa mite. It feeds on honeybees and passes along deadly viruses. Experts also suggest that an increase in pesticide use has put bees at greater risk of infection or poisoning. And it’s likely that factors such as habitat loss, drought, and climate change are threatening honeybee populations as well. WHY BEES MATTER Bees are much more than stinging honey-makers. Dalia, 13, has played roller derby for over two years. She belongs to the Hogtown Roller Derby Club in Toronto and plays on the Hogtown Juniors team. Hogtown is the original nickname for the city of Toronto. NAME OF THE GAME Roller derby started in the 1930s. Today, there are over 1,500 amateur leagues all over the world, including more than 30 in Canada. The sport focuses on having fun and makes space for players of all skill levels. Cold rice paper rolls were invented in Vietnam. They are sometimes called spring rolls, summer rolls, or salad rolls.
