THE MARTIN & LEWIS YEARS
Before the Beatles, before Elvis, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis created a sensation. In a time when America needed to let loose (1946-1956), the handsome crooner from Steubenville, Ohio, and the skinny funnyman from New Jersey made Americans laugh themselves silly. Lewis was just 20 when he hooked up with Martin, his senior by 10 years. “Dean was the suave one, the cool one, the one in charge.
I was the whacked-out, terminally insecure (and dangerously uninhibited one),” Lewis wrote in his 2005 book, Dean & Me (A Love Story). “He was the yin to my yang.” After 10 years, the silly act and the togetherness wore thin and the duo split and went on to successful solo careers.
