When I was studying at Harvard, I spoke to one of my professors about gender- and sexual-based violence, and we looked at the bonobo apes as a model of how an egalitarian society can flourish. My professor introduced me to Sally Coxe, president and cofounder of the Bonobo Conservation, which helps to preserve endangered bonobos—there are only 10,000 to 15,000 bonobos left—and helps locals in Congo live in harmony with the extraordinarily vital habitat.
