In his latest drama, director Clint Eastwood plays around with the idea of heroes versus antiheroes. The factual story, at its core, is a doozy: In 1996, a high-strung security guard named Richard Jewell (Paul Walter Hauser, who’s excellent) becomes public enemy No. 1 when he’s accused of planting a bomb at the Olympics in Atlanta. (Never mind that he actually alerted authorities to the bomb and saved thousands of lives.) Jewell is massively sympathetic and surrounded by good people who believe in him — including his attorney (Sam Rockwell) and his mom (Kathy Bates). And his downfall in the court of public opinion holds even more relevance today.
