An intriguing mix of old and new brands led the categories in our most recent blind tasting, where we assess the quality of cigars without knowing brand name, price, country of origin or any other identifying quality. Newer names including Sublimes (making its first appearance in CIGAR AFICIONADO, and a very good one), HR (the brainchild of Cuban tobacco grower Hirochi Robaina) and Psyko Seven (an edgy initiative from Ventura Cigar Co.) ranked with such legends of the business as Bolivar and Montecristo, which are both Cuban classics, as well as Fuente and Padrón. The rankings here are yet more evidence that the global cigar market is brimming with top-quality smokes.TOP CHURCHILLHAMMER + SICKLE TRADICION SERIE CHURCHILLThis floral, elegant and sweet smoke tied with the well-known Bolivar Corona Gigante for…

cuba on the mind

(DAVID YELLEN)Look around—Cuba is everywhere. On the television news. In the papers. On radio. The December announcement that the United States was moving closer to normalizing relations with its long-time adversary to the south has prompted a keen interest in Cuba. But here at CIGAR AFICIONADO Cuba is not just the latest thing. We have been there all along.Just as the premium cigar industry was born in Cuba, the inspiration for this very magazine came from a visit to that tropical Caribbean island some 24 years ago. Dear Marvin,I have lived in the Miami, Florida, area for almost 30 years off and on and have Cuban relatives by marriage. I have seen the bitter fights of the Cuban embargo being ensnarled with the hatred of the Castro brothers, and all that was lost when they left Cuba or were forced out.For the last 50 years the Cuban-American population starting over in the United States has benefitted from the opportunities. They have made many contributions to the American community in culture, government and the private business sector, which has built a beautiful present-day Miami. The other side of the coin is that all two million Cubans in the United States have been well housed, fed and educated. They have prospered with the opportuni-ties that are available in the United…

els for autism pro-am raises $1.2 million

There on the driving range, swinging slowly and rhythmically in a leisurely manner, stood the No. 1 golfer in the world, Rory McIlroy. Jack Nicklaus, the greatest player ever to pick up golf clubs, was only a few feet away, chatting with Ernie Els, owner of the smoothest swing in the game. Greg Norman, stylish as ever in a black hat emblazoned with his shark logo, drove by in a golf cart, his smile even brighter than the day’s sunshine. Four men, 28 major championships between them, part of a legendary cast of 22 star golfers who were about to tee it up for a very good cause at Old Palm Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. All around them were the amateur golfers who would join them for one…
