reality check

I don’t like the “woe is me” attitude. I’m usually the “grit my teeth” sort of character. But I have to say that life as the editor of OFFGRID isn’t easy. Don’t get me wrong, it’s often fun and amazingly rewarding, though it can be tough on my social and family life. That’s why vacations are so important. I don’t get many of them, but when I do, I like to get away — mentally and physically. So I recently traveled to visit friends in Houston, Texas. When I arrived, I was greeted with humidity that would cause Satan to sweat and with flash flood warnings texted to my phone from the National Weather Service. I got front-row seats to Mother Nature’s special effects show: rain, hail, lightning, and thunder. The…

gear up

1 MAKE & MODEL 5.11 Tactical Stryke Shorts COLORWAY Black, dark navy, khaki, TDU green (shown), and tundra MSRP $75 URL NOTES We’ve always hated how athletic shorts don’t have enough pockets to hold our everyday-carry gear, while dress shorts are too stiff and restrict our agility should we need to act fast. Enter the Stryke Shorts, a blend of looks, comfort, and utility. Its Flex-Tac fabric is lightweight and stretchy, while its design offers all the benefits of tactical shorts: full running crotch gusset and lots of pockets, including dual thigh pockets for folding knives or smartphones and low-profile cargo pockets. The kicker? You can wear it with a tank top at the gym or with a polo shirt to a company picnic, and you’d still blend in. 2 MAKE & MODE Hawke Brand Knives Hawkchete OVERALL LENGTH 23.38 inches MSRP $36 URL NOTES If our machete buyer’s…

aa-powered flashlights

What’s the use of a handheld torch that’s as bright as the sun if you can’t get the right-sized batteries for it when you’re in a pickle? In the shooting community, the CR123 battery is ubiquitous, powering everything from lasers to night-vision devices. But when you step out of its Picatinny-paved plains and into the rest of the world, you come to realize that CR123 batteries can be as hard to find as an honest politician. The last thing you need when contending with a natural disaster or a surprise power outage is to have to find some uncommon batteries in the dark or as chaos erupts around you. Thankfully, AA batteries have been abundant for decades. You can even scavenge them from a TV remote when in a bind. In…

what if?

As the fake yellow boat bobs on its underwater track, you’re surprised by the rumbling that you feel just as you take a seat next to your daughter and son-in-law. Must be the ride, you think, as you can barely contain your excitement of having mechanical dinosaurs pop out at you. But as the other passengers sit down in the rows behind you, you have a sense that something is wrong with this Jurassic Park ride. Very wrong. The mild trembling increases to bone-rattling vibrations. Soon the typical screams of delight and surprise you’ve been hearing all day at Universal Studios change to shrieks of genuine fear As the first cracks appear in the nearby concrete, your mind finally assembles the pieces — this is an earthquake! The shaking magnifies, almost…
