editor’s letter

With mass shootings dominating the media’s attention, we should perhaps take a deep breath and consider just what types of threats are likely to be encountered by the law-abiding citizen. Mass casualty events are mercifully rare, and while atrocities such as the Las Vegas shooting suck up the oxygen of public discourse and often result in knee-jerk political reactions, as individuals, we’re far more likely to be victims of more mundane crimes. According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, in 2016 over 1.2 million violent crimes occurred in the U.S., 64 percent of which were aggravated assault. If we’re serious about protecting ourselves and loved ones, then it behooves us to train for the most likely scenarios, rather than the ones that grab the most headlines. Here at CONCEALMENT, we don’t…

1) Mean Gene Leather just went way over the top with its new SBR Case, and we’re going over with them. The company pulled out all the stops and made a beautiful, functional, and, most importantly, barely recognizable rifle case. At press time, HMFIC Gene Higdon, says each case is custom made by hand to fit each customer’s firearm. The case shown is made to hold a short-barreled rifle equipped with a folding stock and a single mag, as shown, but there’s plenty of room in its felt-lined interior for other gear if it’s padded and packed carefully. We can see this thing ferrying safe queens to the range, but that’s a waste. Aside from rifles and carbines, Higdon is working on shotgun and cowboy action versions, and even a…

real-life everyday carry

Given what we’ve seen people purport to actually carry on the Internet, huge clown shoe JNCO jeans coming back to the market starts to make a little bit of sense. But just as with dating sites and gun forums, sometimes you have to take personal declarations with a grain of salt. No, Chad, you shouldn’t list your body type as “athletic” in your profile if you’re 100 pounds overweight. A soldier’s load in Afghanistan is different from a suburban soccer mom; where you live, work, and what you do can and will affect what you carry. Someone who works from home can get away with a helluva lot more than someone in a professional nonpermissive office environment. Unless you have unlimited space, you have to prioritize what you carry and when. Though…

1 MAKE Crossbreed MODEL Founder’s Series SuperTuck IWB Holster and Executive Gun Belt FITS Too many to list MSRP Starting at $90 and $85 FURTHER crossbreedholsters.com NOTES The SuperTuck IWB is one of our favorite holsters for comfort and convenience when carrying IWB, and we’re glad to see Crossbreed’s stayed true to the original with this release honoring the company’s founder, Mark Craighead. Crossbreed honors Craighead by using top shelf, undyed, 11-ounce, 100-percent vegetable tanned leather for the holster and separately available Executive Gun Belt. Each holster and belt has its own look, as the hide used by Crossbreed has natural oils and tallows applied under pressure, imparting each piece of hide with a unique appearance. Crossbreed…

the ppq m2 q4 tac brings plug-and-play modularity to walther’s pistol line

The cottage industry for aftermarket accessories, enhancements, and modifications for carry and duty pistols has grown to levels previously unseen in the American firearms market. Customization, personalization, and modularity are the names of the game in today’s pistol scene. While it’s unlikely that any big box manufacturer of firearms will ever be able to outpace or out-spec the aftermarket for pistol upgrades, (some) of these companies are growing more savvy by the quarter and realize that it’s possible to at least keep up. Walther’s PPQ M2 line of carry and defensive pistols have a lot going for them. They fit the industry-standard size sweet spot that makes them usable for duty issue or concealed carry. The ergonomics are commendable. The trigger is perfectly acceptable. But, as with most things, there’s always…

the warrior within is always armed

Areas of this country are growing more unsteady by the minute, with rising political tensions, natural disasters, or lack of funding for adequate police protection. As much as we believe in carrying our sidearm all day, every day, sometimes you may be caught off-guard without so much as a pocket knife at your disposal. Faced with a flash mob of black-clad protestors intent on causing mayhem in your city, could you defend yourself? This isn’t an inconceivable scenario. These types of mobs are known to carry makeshift clubs, bricks, camp axes, hammers, brass knuckles, and whatever else they can get their hands on. In this article, we take a look at improvised melee weapons to level the playing field and, more importantly, give ourselves an advantage. There are several categories of improvised…
