As the year draws to a close, I find myself drawn to Scotland even more. Perhaps it’s the Celt in me, but I’ve always found Scotland even more appealing in autumn and winter, when her wild, elemental beauty comes into its own and there are far fewer people around to spoil the sense of escapism. In The Norse Isles (p12), writer Stephen McGinty tells of a visit to Shetland, somewhere I’m hoping to make it to this winter (if I’m allowed). This remote archipelago, which has evidence of human habitation dating back 5,000 years, still wears her Scandinavian heritage with pride and if you can’t make it this year, it’s worth planning ahead for next winter when the famous fire festivals will hopefully light up the islands once more.
