survive the doubt

As you read this, 75 years ago this June, American soldiers faced fears and doubts as Normandy Beach, the Atlantic Wall and the strength of the German forces loomed very large on the horizon. John MacPhee, a private in the 16th infantry of the 1st Division, E Company, was on board the USS Henrico and waiting to go ashore. He remembers, “The night before was like waiting to go to the electric chair. Being a part of the first wave, we were told that we would probably all be killed, not too encouraging.” Sergeant Felice P. Nappi of the 175th infantry of the 29th Division, 2nd Battalion, wondered, “Would we face up to the challenge? What was mortal combat really like? Would a lot of our friends be killed or…

A Mother’s Prayer Woman headlocks starving mountain lion to save 7-year-old son Chelsea Lockhart was upstairs in her home on Vancouver Island when she heard her son cry out from the backyard. “I ran downstairs…,” she said of the start of what would be a harrowing experience. “I turned the corner and saw this animal on my child.” A mountain lion was using its jaws to pin Lockhart’s son, 7-year-old Zach, to the ground near where he’d been playing with his sister. “I just thought, ‘Oh my god, my kid could die right before my eyes,’” she said. “All you think is, ‘What can you do? What can you do in your own physical strength?’” As she got closer, Lockhart saw that the big cat had locked onto Zach’s arm. What happened next would…

switchbolts of fire

This year, Magnum Research engineers added a few new options to their well-made, and generally more accurate, interpretation of the famous Ruger 10/22 carbine that will appeal to hunters and competition shooters. Their objective with the Magnum Lite Rifle (MLR) line was to take the classic semi-auto platform to a match-grade level but without the high match-grade price tag. For those looking to put small game on the supper table, there are several new models to consider that have compactness and durability with either a threaded muzzle or an integral suppressor. The model I tested was the new SSH22G with an MSRP of $794. On the surface, it looks like a traditionally stocked carbine with an exaggerated cantilever rail on top of the receiver and a heavy match bull barrel, but…

sightmark core sx 3-9x40mm .22 lr rimfire scope

Designed specifically for .22 LR shooters and hunters in particular, this 1-inch-tubed, durable, hardcoat anodized scope weighs 14.2 ounces, is adjustable from 3X to 9X magnification and shockproof, fogproof and dustproof/waterproof to the IP67 standard. Translated, the IP67 means that it scored a 6 (the highest rating) by resisting the “harmful” penetration of dust or dirt into the unit after being in direct contact with the matter for eight hours. The 7 represents the second-highest rating for water resistance, indicating it was undamaged by immersion in water at a depth of up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. I will probably never hunt with my .22 underwater or in an eight-hour dust storm, but it’s nice to know I could. This scope has a .22 LR bullet-drop compensating (BDC)…

the mississippi hunter

The first time I met Donavon Phillips, he scared the hell out of me. I was attending the June 2018 Grind-In event at Bark River Knives in Escanaba, Michigan, minding my own business and standing in line for one of the machines. This giant of a man, sporting an equally large knife on his belt, walked up to me and rumbled, “I need to get with you later.” He then walked away without another word. I had no idea who he was and spent the next hour alternating between wondering what I’d done to offend him and planning an escape route. Turns out, he just wanted to talk knives. He’s a world-class competitor in the cutting sports realm, and he’s also the executive director for Blade-Sports International. Among his many accomplishments is…
