References to colour permeate our language and our psyches. We use hues to articulate and accentuate meaning in our speech. We connect with cultural colour references that vary from nationality to nationality. And brands try to employ the psychology of colour to transmit a desired identity through signage and literature – some so powerfully that simply seeing a particular colour can call to mind the brand: Hunter (wellington) green, Hermès orange, Cadbury’s purple, for example, with Tiffany & Co’s robin’s egg blue surely being the standout case in point. ALUN CALLENDER fell in love with photography as a teenager, fascinated by its technique and visual expression. These days, Brighton-based Alun is much in demand, shooting interiors and portraits for editorial, design and advertising clients. “I’m very lucky as it hardly ever feels like work,” he says, “most days are spent in the company of interesting, inspiring people with wonderful stories.” A favourite shoot was photographing Darcey Bussell at the Royal Opera House: “It was incredible to see her fly around the room.” Alun also works on personal projects, taking portraits of creative people in their studios. “Narrative is always very important in my photography,” he says. Alun photographed the house feature starting on page 56. JANET MCMEEKIN is an established freelance writer who travels the UK and abroad interviewing property…

Here, to reflect the companionship and joy a dog can bring, we offer a curation of buys celebrating man’s best friend and ensuring his or her comfort at home.…

red alert

‘Ultra Violet’ has been touted in some quarters as colour of the year, but The English Home team is much more drawn to red and has noted its use in interiors by Robert Kime, Luke Edward Hall, Charlotte Crosland and Rita Konig, to name just a few. Perfect for country, classic and softly modern interiors as an uplifting accent colour, it is a surprisingly versatile contrast to green, teal, grey, both dark and light blues and, used carefully, against pink.…
