live, from the emmy nominations! tv’s oldest trick is new again

All that’s old is new again, at least in TV, which increasingly is betting on the oldest trick in its book: live programming, which scored notable Emmy nominations across genres and categories. In the outstanding special class program category, this year’s nominees are Hairspray Live!, the latest in a string of NBC live musicals; ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel-hosted 89th Academy Awards; Fox’s Super Bowl LI Halftime Show Starring Lady Gaga; and CBS’ James Corden-hosted Tony Awards, aka the “Hamiltonys,” from more than a year ago. One outstanding variety special nominee is Showtime’s Stephen Colbert election night offering, for which CBS’ late-night host went to its cable sister network so he could speak freely while reacting to election returns. In best variety sketch series is NBC’s Saturday Night Live, which this season, for the…

angst is in with tv’s leading men

DRAMA Sterling K. Brown This Is Us (NBC) ↑Last year’s breakout star, for the limited series The People v. O.J. Simpson, returns to contention, now for a drama series with a huge audience on a broadcast network, for which he has already picked up a SAG Award nom. [[pg10]↓]He isn’t helped by having won an Emmy last year and sharing a category this year with co-star Milo Ventimiglia (his character’s adoptive father). Anthony Hopkins Westworld (HBO) ↑ The TV Academy loves movie stars like this legendary Oscar winner, who also has won two Emmys (decades ago). In HBO’s $100 million sci-fi fantasy, 2017’s most nominated scripted series, he plays the creator of an android-populated amusement park. ↓ Not everyone is enamored with the show’s handling of his character in the season finale. Bob Odenkirk Better Call Saul (AMC) ↑ For his…

If any comedy stands to challenge Veep’s Emmy dominance, it’s creator Donald Glover’s existential take on Atlanta’s hip-hop scene. It won the comedy Golden Globe as well as the comedy actor trophy for Glover last January, and made HBO’s political satire look like less of a sure thing than it has in six years. Director and executive producer Hiro Murai spoke with THR about the unexpected hit. I still can’t believe we got away with … I’m surprised we got away with the entire show. We were expecting it to not last past a season, just because everything we were doing felt like it was so much for us and not anybody else. I’m surprised there was no pushback and that it actually got on air. And this is a small…

Brian Tyree Henry quickly became a standout for his portrayal of Alfred “Paper Boi” Miles. That he was snubbed for his supporting role when the Emmy nominations were announced in July pissed off a lot of critics — but Henry did score a guest actor nom for an appearance on NBC’sThis Is Us. And sinceAtlantahas taken off, the musically inclined actor gets a lot of love from fans, even if he gets mistaken for his rapping counterpart. “It’s intense,” Henry said duringTHR’s Comedy Actor Roundtable in April. “I like it when [fans] don’t know the name, though. I’ll get Paper Bag. I get Paper Man.” “ I think you give people a little sweetness of what they want, but you also give them something they don’t know. People just want to…

what thr’s critic said

Atlanta is an existential comedy that works its most compelling magic by witnessing the everyday motions of life — scenes that have purpose but no apparent destination because much of what Glover’s character, Earn Marks, yearns for in Atlanta is not to be poor. It’s really that simple. In so many such ways, Atlanta seems like a movie that is signaling the coming out of a major, unique voice. Glover has conceptualized a world he wants to document and, like Aziz Ansari’s Master of None, his show feels fresh and deceptively simple while also being assured. The series is wholly original in that it’s an existential young black comedy about surviving the day — without explicitly trying to be representative of any of those things. Its simplicity and execution are shockingly self-assured…

odds are...

Atlantais the Emmys’ biggest wild card. Coming off its Globes success, an unreliable barometer where TV Academy voters are concerned, Glover’s opus is the only new entry in the comedy race. He has been making friends in TV since breaking out as a writer and recurring extra on30 Rock, but what remains to be seen is whether enough voters have watched his show or just know they’re supposed to. That’s a problem shared byAtlanta’s clearest peer,Louie, which got its Emmy love in the form of writing wins, a category whereAtlantahas two noms.…
