it’s beginning to look a lot like christmas …

For almost four decades, all I’ve known is small town Christmas celebrating and shopping. I ’ve run b ehind unstable toddlers who chase Santa on the fire engine right down the middle of Main Street. I’ve set my kids loose every year in a downtown to do their shopping and then gathered for dinner as the lights began to glow, their cheeks aflame with the cold and the excitement. I’ve sung carols in the park and petted a lot of reindeer. I’ve even been so pregnant and forgetful that I left my passel of packages at not one but two stores in a small downtown and gratefully sipped warm cider while a boy I coached in soccer ran back to retrieve them. One of the highlights: the annual parade featuring bagpipers, carolers donning traditional 19th-century garb, and the lighting of the city’s 30-foot-tall Christmas tree—which is delivered down River Street by a team of draft horses.
