celebrating the legacy of jeff smith

This, our 443rd issue and the start of our 38th year, is particularly poignant for me. I am saying goodbye to working every day with my friend and cherished colleague of decades; Jeff Smith, our editorial leader, has joined Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities as their Communications Director. We are huge fans and supporters of Groundwork’s mission and work, so if we had to lose Jeff to anyone, we are particularly happy he is taking his mind and talent to such a terrific organization and worthy cause. I met Jeff when we were both waiting tables at the Great Lakes Steak Company. He was 22 and just out of University of Michigan with English and Psychology degrees. I was 24 and had left my job in trade magazines in Chicago the…

@THELYDIALOOK Share your #MyNorthMoments Summer fun in Northern Michigan! Tag @MyNorthMedia @THELYDIALOOK “I would tell my friend to …” 1. Walk to the brink of the Upper Tahquamenon Falls. They’re 200 feet wide and have a 50-foot drop and are the second largest falls east of the Mississippi. The max flow ever recorded was 50,000 gallons/second, but an average day in summer would be like 5,000 gallons / sec. You can hear how loud it is, feel the mist, smell its mix of fresh and musty water. 2. Hike the River Trail. It traces the 5 miles between the upper and lower falls. Sometimes you are walking along the river. Sometimes you are in big hardwood stands. It’s 10 miles round trip, but a shuttle bus in peak times can take you back to the trailhead. 3. Rent…

RED HOT BEST CAMPGROUND TAHQUAMENON FALLS STATE PARK We asked Kevin Dennis, Park Supervisor at Tahquamenon Falls State Park what he’d tell a friend to do when visiting visiting the place he’s worked for 15 years. RED HOT BEST CHERRY PRODUCT CHERRIES MOOBILEE Cherries Moobilee is a legend, not just in Northern Michigan, but also around the nation, as proven by Good Morning America voters and Rachel Ray and others. We asked ice cream flavor chief Jon Plummer how the dark-cherry-chocolate-brownie-swirl cold and creamy delight came to be. Here’s what he revealed. “Back in the early days of Moomers, Dad was making ice cream and he had some brownies left over and he just threw them into a batch of black cherry ice cream and added some fudge chocolate swirl and then put it in the…

Take it easy in Benzie. Book your stay at Chimney Corners Resort in Frankfort, a favorite mom-and-pop operation offering old-fashioned summer cottage rentals nestled among wooded hills and on the shores of Crystal Lake. Pick from beachfront or bluff cottages and take in scenic views from your private deck or patio. The resort’s 300 acres include plenty of wooded paths, or take the day to hike Arcadia Dunes, Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy’s largest preserve, with more than 15 miles of trail. Stop by the Oliver Art Center in Frankfort afterward before catching dinner at The Fusion (Pan-Asian cuisine married with American flair) or Stormcloud Brewing Company (for Belgian-inspired Michigan-made brews). Mark the Fourth on Mackinac. For a small-town, supremely patriotic Fourth of July, take the ferry across the Straits to Mackinac Island,…

I am here to learn. That is the whole reason I’ve been patrolling up and down Main Street in East Jordan looking for North Perk—the rendezvous place. I’ve conned a bona fide guide into taking me brook trout fishing for a story. Preparing for this day for two months, I’ve tried to stuff in a lifetime of fly-fishing poise and know-how to not embarrass myself. With self-satisfaction, I recognize the mayflies clinging to the exterior of the cafe are of the Hexagenia limbata variety. The Hex. But I deflate when I realize that here my fly-fishing acumen comes to an abrupt halt. The door creaks and in walks my day’s mentor—Brian Kozminski of True North Trout guide services. Tall, lean and donning a tartan shirt and neckbuff, it’s no mistake this…
