helloooo, lake powell

After reading the subject line of the emailed press release, I was going to write about the “Next Evolution of the Koozie” this month. Instead, I was moved to opine about the less controversial, though more salient, subject of winter storage and how it might differ from other variants of boat storage. That last bit is a pet peeve of mine. Read, write, photograph and edit more than 100 different articles on the subject of storing boats during the offseason, like I have, and you too may become a bit punchy. The main point I’d like to get across may seem brutally obvious. But I am going to state it anyway. Most of what is needed to protect a boat and engine during winter storage is identical to that which is…

parks bonifay

Parks Bonifay has known fame since before he knew much else. As the first-born of Cypress Gardens show skiers Pete and Betty Bonifay, Parks set a Guinness World Record in 1982 for water skiing at the tender age of 6 months and 29 days. Since then, the “amazing ski baby” has gone on to become one of the most influential and legendary pro wakeboarders in the sport’s history, having been featured in a video game and had an award-winning documentary made about his life. These days he’s on the water as much as ever, continuing to live the only way he’s ever known how. What was it like growing up in a show-ski family and having the Guinness World Record as the youngest person to water-ski? Growing up at Cypress Gardens (now…

a koozie for your phone? the phoozy

I’ve come to rely on the tiny hand computer that is my phone for more than just communication on board; now it’s often the centerpiece for both entertainment and navigation. Bringing a smartphone on board, however, still presents a litany of problems. Like, where to put it? Leaving it exposed on deck can subject it to drops, salt water and the sun. I’ve seen phones go dead many times from overheating. (Conversely, in colder weather the battery drains at a rapid clip.) Some people use waterproof cases that float and can withstand a hit from a car tire, but they always seem to diminish the camera or the audio. Often, I still resort to the old standby plastic sandwich bag, or I just throw it in a waterproof backpack, to…

albemarle 27 dc

With a decades-long reputation for making some of the softest-riding boats, North Carolina builder Albemarle Boats introduces a new dual-console model, dubbed the 27 DC. Possessing the deep, 24-degree transom deadrise that Albemarle is known for, it is an essential ingredient in the Albemarle recipe for boats that can be run through rough inlets and far out into the ocean with confidence, control and comfort. Powered by twin Yamaha outboards of up to 500 hp total, the 27 DC debuts this fall as Albemarle celebrates its 40th anniversary. The 27 DC offers a broader appeal than many other fishy models. The bow, helm, and cockpit seating will offer ample space and comfort for family and friends. The cockpit is uncluttered and well-laid-out for multiple purposes. Albemarle maintains that its 27 DC will distinguish…
