neat is nice, but comfy is mandatory

I LIKE SO MANY things about this year’s Real Simple Idea Home. I like that it’s colorful. I like that it’s clean and simple and beautifully designed. I like that it’s organized. And that it has moments of serenity and corners of creativity. When you get right down to it, neat is nice, but comfy is mandatory. In the photo above, I am hugging a watercolor of my dog, Milo, from the Etsy shop Coconuttowers. The piece hangs in the home’s upstairs library, a.k.a. “woman cave,” and was commissioned by Etsy’s Dayna Isom Johnson, who always wants…

#RSLOVE “HOME IS WHERE OUR FAMILY BLOOMS. IN THE GARDEN WE GROW!” @LAPETITJARDIN All are welcome, and though we may not always agree, the love never ends. @BOC2G10 Life is simple. You can be uninhibited. You can watch and listen to whatever you want. You can laugh as loudly as you want. You can cry as much as you want. There is no judgment. NIKKI MORRIS, LIMA, OHIO There’s a room with an oversize chair and an array of books just waiting to be read. KIMBERLEY COX, BLACKLICK, OHIO The Wi-Fi connects automatically. @SOOVERYKARI Real change begins. It’s where you can have heart-to-heart discussions about sensitive subjects, ask questions without judgment, and do the work so you can go out into the world with an open mind, better prepared to stand up and speak out for what you believe…

"home is a feeling"

ABOUT TWO MONTHS after my almost 87-year-old grandmother died, I spent some time at her house. While it was strange to be there without her, I loved going through her old photos and possessions, like her typewriter and sewing machine. They reminded me she was a girl, a teenager, a wife, and a lady in addition to being my Gram. In the process, I learned more about her pink stucco house, which always stood out in our small town in the best way. The house was built by her dad, Harley, in 1938, for himself and his wife, Sallie, who my mom is named for. He saw a picture in a book and tore it out because he wanted to build a home just like it—never mind that it was in…

Witty Rom-Com Lucy is a 40-something white mother of two. Joseph is a 22-year-old Black aspiring DJ. When they meet at the London butcher shop where Joseph works, they’re caught off-guard by their feelings for each other, and nearly as baffled by their awkward courtship as their wide-eyed friends and family are. Just Like You by Nick Hornby is a sweet and funny testament to the wonderful things that happen when you allow yourself to follow your heart. Memoir With a Message Once I Was You is a candid, timely autobiography by Emmy Award–winning journalist and NPR anchor Maria Hinojosa. Drawing on her Mexican family’s relocation to the U.S. and her experience in media, Hinojosa tells the searing story of how our immigration policy came to be—and what it means for every single…
