March 21, 2014 Mr. James Fallon Host, The Tonight Show 30 Rockefeller Plaza New York, NY 10112 RE: The Tonight Show Dear Mr. Fallon (May I call you Jimmy?), Thank you for having me on The Tonight Show last week to discuss your upcoming pickup-truck purchase. I hope that I was helpful and didn't distract from the show's new and delicious energy. Before you and your producers extended the invitation, I'm sure you were aware that pickup trucks are not a mainstay at Road & Track. Yet you smartly realized our passion extends to anything we find interesting. That includes pickups, which I and many of the staff own, and which we occasionally cover. So kudos to you, sirs, and plaudits. Even so, I made a significant and embarrassing gaffe. The Toyota Tacoma is, in fact, built in…

Porsche's pricelessstockpile 28 2014 Le Mans preview 30 Here comes the sun:How to defend your eyes 38 A liar's guide to the Bugatti Veyron 40 "Real history—Formula 1,land-speed-record cars, all of that—forcesyou to see what could be feasible." DANIEL SIMON, DESIGNER, AUTHOR, AND CREATOR OF THE TIMELESS RACER (PAGE 20). Time On His Mind DESIGNING RACE CARS FOR AN ALTERNATE, AND POSSIBLY BETTER, REALITY. DANIEL SIMON ONCE DREW cars for Bugatti, but even that job left his imagination wanting. In his 2007 book, Cosmic Motors, about a world where car and spacecraft have blurred into a single machine, Simon dreamed of fission-powered turbines, phase-change polymers, and "drive-by-mind" controls. Hollywood came calling, and Simon found himself building fictional vehicles for movies like Captain America, Oblivion, and Prometheus. He's just released the first of three books in a series dubbed…

A few months ago, I followed a discussion on the Internet. Clarification: I followed a discussion on Facebook, which is like the Internet crossed with a gossipy prison camp. It was one of those back-and-forth sessions where someone makes a good point, someone else makes an equally good point, and then a third person chimes in with the fact that Obama is vaccinating your health care blah blah and OH LOOK PICTURES OF KITTENS. Annoying, but the topic kept my attention. They were talking about manual gearboxes. This has been on my mind lately. We drive a lot of new cars around here, and clutch pedals grow rarer every day. We also meet a lot of engineers. Most don't believe manuals are relevant—they say the modern car must deliver speed and efficiency,…

highway k: near misses

Father's Day is traditionally when guys share anecdotes of how their dads taught them to love the firing order of the Chevy small-block. And this is good, because fathers and sons always have a hard time seeing eye to eye. The American fatherly tradition is to show love by teaching your son how to change his own oil or check tire pressure. Sadly, this almost missed me. And then I wrecked my dad's Buick. My dad was car-blind. He famously owned a Chevy Vega, an AMC Gremlin, and a Ford Pinto in quick succession. I don't know if this was the cause for or simply a result of his dislike of cars, but it certainly didn't help. He didn't much like driving, either, viewing it as a chore and going at it…

The new, the offbeat, and the just plain cool Mercedes-Benz C400 4Matic 56 Porsche Macan 62 BMW M1 Procar 66 Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG 70 Entry-level Germans 72 Cheat Sheet 74 "The car stands today as a historical oddity, a moment when BMW backed into a project only later seen as genius." LARRY WEBSTER ON THE BMW M1 PROCAR FROM 1978 (PAGE 66). [ 2015 ] Mercedes-Benz C400 4Matic TEN POUNDS OF FANCY IN A FIVE-POUND BAG. MERCEDES INTRODUCED THE BABY BENZ 30 years ago. The 190E was the first-ever tiny luxury car, and Stuttgart needed it to be taken seriously. To accomplish that, the subcompact was designed as a shrunken S-class in stature but not in substance. It was a genuine advancement in engineering, safety, and luxury, but chiefly, it drove like every other Benz—soft and cushy. In the intervening years, Mercedes, along…
