DEARBORN HERO 3.0 In 2005, Ford launched the GT supercar in tribute to its 100-year anniversary. This year, it unveiled the 2017 GT, a hand-built carbon thundersled expected to cost $400,000. We can’t yet drive it, but Ford recently offered us time with a prototype and a camera. Dig in. EIGHT YOUR HEART OUT The old GT’s V-8 and six-speed manual are gone, replaced by a twin-turbo V-6 and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Yes, we want an eight and—more important—a clutch pedal, and we’re not going to stop harping about either. But the 3.5-liter EcoBoost is no small consolation: It’s rooted in the same Daytona Prototype engine that won the Rolex 24 in January. Output will top 600 hp. CARBON, CARBON, EVERYWHERE A carbon tub and active aero are modern-supercar de rigueur. The GT has…

Dear R&T, I’ve noticed a change at R&T. The magazine has rediscovered itself, again focusing on the relationship between cars and people. The transformation these past few years has been dramatic. And the redesigned February issue! The layout is exemplary, the graphics excellent, and the editorial spot-on. It’s the magazine I look forward to each month. I’m glad you’re back, R&T. I’ve missed you. RON HILLBURY, GRESHAM, OREGON LITTLE RED MERCEDES From your story on the Mercedes-AMG GT S [“Mercenary Merc,” February 2015], it’s clear that this is a completely new model, not an SLS replacement. I’m impressed that AMG has taken the reins and built a car that puts performance first and luxury second. But what happened to the gullwing doors? Lamborghini, McLaren, and BMW shouldn’t have all the fun these days. JOSEPH VALENTINO AUSTIN,…

editor’s letter

In 30 seconds,” the producer said over my headphones, “the commercial break will end.” Then we’d be live, on air, calling the 2015 12 Hours of Sebring. On my left, expert commentator Bob Varsha casually flipped through notes; on my right, racer-turned-television-personality Justin Bell checked his phone and laughed. Fifteen seconds. Varsha and Bell looked up. Out the window of our cramped booth, cars streamed past below. Five seconds. An hour earlier, I’d stepped inside one of the four trailers that comprise the Fox Sports broadcast compound, hoping that a peek behind the scenes might calm my nerves. What I found was mesmerizing: three guys jammed inside a space barely bigger than a bathroom stall, staring at a wall of 60 small screens, each with a different view of the 3.7-mile…

moving stuff

CROSS-COUNTRY MOVES are both amazing and terrible. I was reminded of this two days ago, when I drove to Seattle from Road & Track’s home in Ann Arbor, Michigan. (Old job: Executive Editor. New job: Editor at Large. Switching roles for more writing and a change of pace.) Most of our house went into a moving truck. The rest came with me, in a diesel Ford Transit van borrowed from Dearborn. The Ford left the Midwest holding my dog, my friend and codriver Jeff Diehl, and boxes of fragile stuff I wanted to keep an eye on. Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington. Three days. Instructional. You expect a fully loaded cargo van to drive like garbage, a mule with too many bags. The Transit, a bright light in the…

strange connections

I HAVE LOTS OF FRIENDS who work on cars for a living. You could call them mechanics, but I think of them as supersleuths. I could write a book about some of the mysteries they’ve solved, like whacked-out windshield wipers caused by faulty fuel pumps or stability control that refuses to work because of dirty engine oil. Today’s cars are so electronically interconnected that problems manifest themselves with the most bizarre symptoms. Here’s one for you: BMW turbochargers are killing batteries in search of fuel savings. BMW is no stranger to strange problems. The company has an admirable track record of introducing new technologies. Unfortunately, the new tech tends to be unreliable at first. The latest example giving BMW’s warranty department gas is the N63 twin-turbocharged V-8, introduced in 2008. BMW of…
