stories of failure & glory

EDITOR@4WOR.COM WE HAVEN’T HAD A Whoops! issue in a long time. That’s mostly because the reader-driven columns are increasingly difficult to get submissions for. So here’s the part of the show when I get down on bended knee with hat in hand and ask the audience for a ducat or two in the form of your anecdotal Whoops submission. Go ahead and email them to editor@4wor.com and don’t forget to include a high-res jpeg image, a description of what happened, and your name, city, state, and (if you want) contact information just in case we have some swag kicking around to send your way. Don’t worry—nothing that’s sent to that email address is shared with shady marketing companies or sold off to mailing lists. It’s just the inbox of the 4WOR…

With the Power Wagon clearly in its sights—the press release claimed better towing and payload capacities than Dodge’s brute—Ford’s Tremor package includes a 2-inch front-end lift, 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires on 18-inch matte-finished wheels, progressive-rate springs, twin-tube shocks with 1.7-inch pistons and internal hydraulic rebounds, an electric locking rear diff and a new Dana limited-slip front diff, the skidplates from the FX4 models, and runningboards that tuck up against the body “for damage control.” The Tremor package is available for XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum F-250 and F-350 Super Duty models with either the 7.3L gas or 6.7L Power Stroke diesel engine. • FORMER FORD AND CHRYSler exec Lee Iacocca passed away at age 94. Iacocca was behind the launch of two vehicles that created entire vehicle segments. The Mustang gave birth to the ponycar segment in 1964, and the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager created the minivan segment in 1984. He was also instrumental in Chrysler’s purchasing AMC, and with it the Jeep brand, in the late 1980s. • NEXT YEAR’S MINT 400 desert race in Las Vegas will take place March 3-8, with racing moving to Friday the 6th (for motorcycle and Limited/Sportsman classes) and Saturday the 7th (for the faster Limited/Unlimited classes). • SEMA SENT OUT A NOTICE through its SEMA Action Network that the California Coastal Commission is reviewing the permit for OHV use at the Oceano Dunes SVRA. Commission members have made clear their intent is to limit current OHV use at Oceano Dunes and eventually eliminate access, says SEMA. The Commission is reviewing staff suggestions to amend the permit, which include a prohibition on night riding, the addition of more fencing to restrict OHV use, eliminating unlimited OHV use on holidays, and increased enforcement efforts focused on vehicle use and speed limit. The Commission is also reviewing proposals to provide year-round protection to a 300-acre endangered species area, which is currently protected on a seasonal basis, and future closures for the purpose of dust control. • THE U.S. HOUSE NATURAL…
