race at your own pace

WHILE most of us casually tour around the outback taking in the sights and sounds, there’s a breed of person who like to do it as fast as mechanically possible. Off-road racing might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s no denying it’s one hell of a spectacle. An event like the Finke Desert race makes a great stop-over if you’re in the red centre around the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. You can camp in the red dirt and witness the cream of Australia’s off-road racing teams fly by at speeds you would not believe. The 2019 Finke race was won by Jack Rhodes in his Class 1 buggy after a stellar performance on Day One to climb from 14th place to second on the run to Finke, and then climb…

2020 defender targets toyota

THE ALL-NEW Defender is set to become a volume player within the Land Rover line-up, in turn taking the fight to off-road market leader Toyota with sharp pricing and a broad model range targeted at the likes of LandCruiser and Prado. The revelation marks a major shift for a nameplate that traces its lineage back to the original Land Rover Series 1 of 1948, the brand keen to claw back some of its former glory as a major player on Australian stations and tracks. The hotly-anticipated new Defender is yet to be officially revealed, but images of disguised vehicles have been released as part of a carefully scripted drip-feed media campaign, including recent shots of the upcoming model in Kenya (seen on these pages). This Defender prototype was tasked with navigating the…

Working with our partners at Tusk in Kenya enabled us to gather valuable performance data,” Nick Collins,Vehicle Line Director, Jaguar Land Rover, said. “The Borana reserve features a wide range of challenging environments, making it a perfect place to test to the extreme the all-terrain attributes of the new Defender.”…

east to west

IT HAS been 50 years since Ian McDonald and some close mates drove a convoy of Jeeps across Australia, from east to west. To celebrate this milestone adventure, 4X4 Australia’s US Correspondent Chris Collard and Ben Davidson of Seven Slot Expedition, along with Ian McDonald and John Eggleston (two of the three surviving members of the original expedition), will head a group of Jeeps from different eras including TJ, JK and new JL Wranglers to replicate the 1969 adventure. BFGoodrich is the expedition’s main sponsor and will be fitting all vehicles with its highly regarded KM3 mud-terrain tyre. Leaving from Australia’s most easterly point of Byron Bay on July 4 and aiming to finish more than 5000km later at the most-westerly, Steep Point, the expedition will retrace McDonald’s original route through…
