the winds of change

AS SPRING arrives the days are getting warmer and longer, the places we visit in our 4x4s change and, I’ve got to say, I’ve had a pretty good winter season. Escaping the southern chill of winter saw me heading to the Red Centre for the Simpson Desert trip you’ll see in this issue, to Kakadu and the Top End for a future feature, and we’re just back from a couple of weeks in the Flinders Ranges where the early blooms of spring were shooting up. All this travel just reminded me what a great place Australia is for 4x4 adventurers, with so much diversity, natural beauty and history all out there to be explored in your vehicle. And you don’t have to drive a million miles to see it! For summer our…

triton revised for 2020

MITSUBISHI has upgraded its Triton ute for 2020 to ensure it at least retains third position in the 4x4 ute sales race behind the ever-popular Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux. Mitsubishi has upped the spec-level on various MY20 Triton models, headlined by the inclusion of a standard rear diff lock on the GLX+, GLS and GLS Premium models. This feature was previously reserved for the top-spec GLS Premium. There will also be a run of 500 ‘Toby Price Limited Edition’ models with special decals and features based on GLS-spec Triton. Despite the addition of the rear diff lock, the Triton GLX+ retains Mitsubishi’s part-time Easy-Select 4WD system, whereas the GLS and GLS Premium models score the more advanced selectable full-time Super-Select 4WD-II system. Tritons equipped with Super-Select 4WD-II also now feature an Off-Road…

2020 patrol unmasked

NISSAN officially dropped the curtains on its 2020 Patrol in the Middle East, with the venerable off-road wagon set for an end-of-year local launch. The Patrol has received a number of notable changes for 2020 including new safety tech and the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Two new features have been added to the list of Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies, with the burly wagon now getting a Forward Collision Warning system as well as Emergency Braking with pedestrian detection. Nissan also claims “significant reductions” in noise and vibration, as well as improved cooling and airflow. The grille has been redesigned and new LEDs have been fitted front and rear, while there’s now also a large chrome nameplate and sequential rear turn indicators. The interior features new diamond-stitch quilted leather seats with extra padding…
