2021 mazda bt-50 unmasked

MAZDA has pulled the covers off its all-new contender in the hotly contested one-tonne 4x4 ute segment. The 2021 Mazda BT-50 won’t go on sale in Australia until Q4 this year, but the brand has given us a look at what to expect. It’s no secret the new BT-50 shares its platform and drivetrain with the new 2020 Isuzu D-Max, which is expected to beat the Mazda to market sometime in July. The switch to the collaboration with Isuzu comes after Mazda and Ford had shared their pickup platforms for past decades. Interestingly, the next-gen Ford Ranger which is due in 2021 will share its engineering with the next Volkswagen Amarok, in what is a very incestuous segment. hilux and fortuner get more power

THE covers have been lifted on Toyota’s Ranger-fighting Hilux and seven-seat Fortuner, with the upgraded models benefiting from a significant hike in power and improved towing capacity. The venerable 2.8-litre engine that powers both the best-selling 4x4 (year-to-date) and the Fortuner has been beefed up to deliver 150kW and 500Nm (with the six-speed auto transmission), up from the outgoing model’s 130kW and 450Nm. Toyota Australia puts this growth down to “multiple new components and enhanced cooling”. For comparison’s sake, the Hilux’s natural rival, the Ford Ranger, delivers 147kW and 470Nm in 3.2-litre guise and 157kW and 500Nm from its 2.0-litre mill. HISTORICAL commercial alliances – and rivalries – within the global ute market means that now, in 2020, all the popular new utes currently on sale are all either near the end of their generational life or midway through a generation. In broad terms that means they are all near 10 years old, or five years old, with none of the current popular utes being new-generation designs. In simple terms, the ‘oldies’ are the VW Amarok, Ford Ranger, Mazda BT-50, Holden Colorado and Isuzu D-MAX, which arrived in Australia in that order in 2011/12.
