tick, tock

Tick, tock, the AD clock cover is a specially created artwork that changes meaning, not time, with just a slight movement of the magazine. The interactive lenticular, titled A Short Essay on Sleep, is by Raqs Media Collective, and is the masterpiece of what everyone now knows is my favourite issue of the year. Raqs Media Collective might just be the most massive artists you have never heard of. I knew them as having previously been shortlisted for the uber-prestigious Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square, and for having curated the 11th Shanghai Biennale. But I didn’t know any of them personally or what their work looked like, let alone that they were based in New Delhi. raqs media collective

Sleep and wakefulness. Life and death. The cycles that form life’s most fundamental experiences that are intrinsic to human nature itself served as the starting point for our cover artwork, titled A Short Essay on Sleep by Raqs Media Collective, an art studio comprising Jeebesh Bagchi, Monica Narula and Shuddhabrata Sengupta (pictured, left to right). Based out of New Delhi, the collective was formed in 1992 and practises across several forms and media. It makes art, produces performances, writes, curates exhibitions, and occupies a unique position at the intersection of contemporary art, philosophical speculation and historical enquiry. “The word ‘raqs’ in several languages denotes an intensification of awareness and presence attained by whirling, turning, being in a state of revolution. Raqs Media Collective takes this sense of ‘kinetic contemplation’ to make…
