One homeowner’s dream design is another’s anathema. And that’s what makes home decorating so personal. Like art, interior styles can provoke strong reactions. A room that’s too bold for one person can make another feel joyfully uplifted. Minimal can also translate as calm. Small as cosy. And so on. For Ashley Valmadre, a childhood spent on an idyllic cherry farm and apple orchard in the US state of Michigan was where her creative life began. The farm wasn’t operational anymore, but its cherry trees were still perfect for climbing and swinging from, and there were plenty of interesting people in her midst. Inspiration was practically blossoming around her. “I grew up around artists,” says Ashley. “There was a granary, a barn and a beautiful pickers’ quarters where my parents’ friends came to paint. I’d go in there and think, ‘what’s happening here?’. It was intriguing. Some of them painted on canvas, others onto the top of a piano stool or tables.
