It's not often you see the photographic community come together in unison – after all, photography for most of us is a solo pursuit, with our engagement with other photographers more often limited to a like on a Facebook post, or a cursory acknowledgment at a sunrise shoot. But sometimes events happen that do bring us together and can serve as a reminder that there's more to what we do than just making and sharing images. In January last year photojournalist Warren Clarke lost a brief battle with cancer at the tender age of 52. Since then, his friends Michael Amendolia and Russell Shakespeare have worked to realise his legacy project, an overview of his three years photographing in India from 2015. You can read more about this and the influential…

storm clouds brewing

For me, adventure is full of unexpected and big ideas, and this time it was no different. I'd booked a one way ticket to join a project roadtripping from Russia to Iran, including stops in Georgia and Armenia. With me, a group of professional slackliners and basejumpers from Russia, Germany, Estonia and Australia: an unlikely mix crossing insecure and dangerous borders. Our choice of vehicle was a rundown 20-year-old Toyota Hiace which we used to look for the most engrossing, challenging and extreme slacklines this amazing part of the world had to offer. In Armenia, we discovered this set of abandoned 70m high power line towers. Spaced 310m apart, two of us scaled the towers to rig the line before the slackliners began their work. On the second day the line was rigged,…

bountiful birds

I remember as a young photographer spending hours working on my technique for photographing birds. Today my son Frazer does the same, honing his photography skills with a family of Ospreys that live near our place in Hervey Bay. I learnt from my mistakes early on and it means that today I find I have a very high success rate without spending an excessive amount of time in the field. Much has been written about what it takes for great bird photography, but my approach is much the same as it was way back then. If you are prepared to put in the effort, you’re bound to come out with fantastic results. Firstly, you must choose the right time and place. Take Kakadu for example. It's stunning for birds most of the…

OLIVE COTTON PORTRAITURE AWARD FINALISTS ANNOUNCED THE 79 finalists selected in this year’s prestigious Olive Cotton Award for photographic portraiture have been announced. A total of 432 entries were received for the 2019 Award. Among the personal and politicised subjects are a number of well-known faces including Australian domestic violence campaigner and 2015 Australian of the Year, Rosie Batty AO, philanthropist Tim Fairfax AC, and Australia’s oldest dancer, 104-year-old Eileen Kramer. 2019 Guest Judge, Australian photo-media artist Marian Drew, said she shortlisted finalists that explore the issue of identity via the complex relationship of sitter, photographer and viewer. “As a judge, I’m looking for something genuine, reflective, curious and fragile—ideas and images that lie at the edge, generating diversity and subtlety”. Entries include a flattened 3D photogrammetric model made from 250 photographs and a series…
