jlr’s next leader needs to bring change in the right places

Visit autoexpress.co.uk for all the latest new cars news OVER the past few days, I understand Tata Sons’ top people have been conducting final interviews for the person who’ll step into some of the most prized and most difficult shoes in the business as CEO of Jaguar Land Rover. The process has been going on for a while; it was announced back in January that Sir Ralf Speth would be stepping down (or should that be up?) to become non-executive vice chairman of JLR and to sit on the board of Tata Sons. No doubt he is involved in the process of appointing his successor, along with chairman of the board of Tata Sons, Natarajan Chandrasekaran. But with just three months until the new CEO takes over, they haven’t got long to…

official vauxhall goes radical with its new mokka

Visit autoexpress.co.uk for your daily news updates New Mokka based on same platform as Corsa and Peugeot 208 Petrol, diesel and electric versions, priced from about £20,000 Jonathan_Burn@dennis.co.uk @Jonathan_burn THIS is the all-new Vauxhall Mokka, a key model for the British company as it aims to take on several fresh rivals in the small SUV market. Revealed in full after months of teaser images, the Mokka gets a radical new look compared with Vauxhall’s previous baby SUV that carried the Mokka X name. The new model is 125mm shorter than its predecessor, but it has smaller front and rear overhangs, and the wheelbase has actually been extended very slightly – by two millimetres. That means this new Mokka should feel more compact than the old Mokka X, yet maintain at least the same level of space and…

RENAULTCAPTUR Price from: £30,495 EV range: 30 miles THE latest generation of Captur represents a major jump forward for Renault’s baby SUV, with much-improved quality and finish inside, more efficient powertrains and an altogether more grown-up experience. The Captur can’t match the Mokka’s all-electric credentials, but there is a plug-in hybrid version called E-Tech. It takes a hit on boot space but it can travel up to 30 miles on electricity alone – while still offering the long-distance flexibility that comes with a petrol engine. MG ZS EV Price from: £25,495 EVrange: 163 miles CHINESE-owned MG used technology from its parent company to come up with one of the early pure-electric small SUVs – and the ZS EV is one of the more keenly priced offerings in the market. The range is a modest 163 miles, but…

vw’s new all-electric suv breaks cover

Chunky look of upcoming ID.4 SUV shown in Chinese documents Based on same platform as ID.3, but taller and longer than hatch James_Brodie@dennis.co.uk @jimmybrods THIS is an unofficial but unobscured look at what will become Volkswagen’s rival for the Tesla Model Y. It’s called the ID.4, and it’s an all-electric SUV based on the same underpinnings as the recently released ID.3 hatch, intended to move the brand’s growing ID. line-up of allelectric cars into a new area of the market. These images have not been issued by Volkswagen. Instead, they’re registered with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, as part of the homologation process for the new ID.4 in China. While the Chinese-specification ID.4 may be slightly different from what will be on roads here in Britain in 2021, the images reveal all regarding the final…

and now volkswagen expands arteon line-up with new estate

ELSEWHERE at Volkswagen, the firm has launched a new Arteon Shooting Brake as part of a facelift for the range. A hot R model and a plug-in hybrid have also been added to the line-up. The Shooting Brake has the same new-look front-end as the saloon; updates are minor but include a new set of LED headlamps, a reshaped grille and new daytime running lights. From the B-pillar rearwards, though, the Shooting Brake is all new, with revisions including a less steeply raked roofline, new quarterlight windows and tailgate, plus updated rear lights. Boot capacity is up to 590 litres and there’s more headroom throughout, VW says. Across the range there’s also the choice of three new paint finishes and three new alloy wheel designs, measuring between 18 and 20 inches. Inside, buyers…

rescue app safely guides first responders

New app for first responders Helps with rescue efforts Hugo_Griffiths@dennis.co.uk @hugo_griffiths A NEW smartphone app created by crash-test body Euro NCAP aims to make car accidents safer for emergency services. It alerts rescue crews to the location of highvoltage batteries and wires – key components in electric cars that pose significant risks if they are cut improperly or damaged. Car makers are already obliged to make ‘rescue sheets’ for their vehicles, indicating where hazardous components – such as batteries, fuel tanks and pressurised struts for boots and bonnets – are located. From this year, Euro NCAP is awarding points in its crash tests based on whether or not this information is “readily available”. It’s a response to the fact that as cars become more complex, “knowing where it’s safe to cut a vehicle should extrication be…
