Like Eddie Jordan (page 73) I’ve been devouring The Last Dance on Netflix. I’m not a huge fan of basketball, but I can still appreciate that Michael Jordan was a stone-cold legend on the court. Unlike Eddie, however, I am not able to stop at a couple of episodes. Hello, 4am. The series is a good reminder that some of the best stories exist in the past. We’ve done a bit of reflecting ourselves lately and you can see the results on this month’s cover. Sometimes a very special superyacht is delivered and then disappears, glanced occasionally in some port or other, but otherwise firmly “off limits”, especially for coverage in a magazine. There are collaborations aplenty between car marques and watch brands these days – but when did it all begin? The answer is way back in 1918 when a young Swiss watchmaker from Biel/Bienne called Georges Schaeren hit on the idea of creating timepieces that would serve as “members’ badges” among well-to-do car owners. Produced under Schaeren’s Mido dial name, the first examples were made around 1920. Aimed at wealthy Bugatti drivers, they had horseshoe-shaped cases based on the design of the cars’ radiator surround, waffle dials inspired by the mesh grilles and top-mounted winding crowns that emulated the radiator caps.
