editor’s letter

You’d think after so many years of slogging round boat shows, my preparations would all be reflexive, burned into my muscle memory. Clearly Covid-19 has atrophied my brain because not only did I forget my toothbrush when heading to the South of France for the recent run of yacht shows, I also failed to pack enough socks. This is despite taking the world’s biggest suitcase and sweeping half of everything I own into it in a mad panic. This, surely, is why you buy a superyacht – so you can maintain multiple closets and never wind up washing socks in a sink. The owner of Boardwalk certainly doesn’t have this problem, given he currently owns two superyachts. So beloved is his Westport 164 that he can’t quite bring himself to…

Adam Nickel Mid-century American design influences Adam’s illustrations. Based in Australia, he has worked for Apple, GQ and Disney, and he’s produced some colorful characters for our crew special (from page 113). What has been your biggest influence as an illustrator? The series of graphic novels called Akira, written and illustrated by Katsuhiro Otomo. They were so impressive visually, and had a huge impact on me at a young age What was the most remerkable praise you ever had for your work? About 10 years ago I did a lot of illustration work for people in the vintage motorcycle scene, and occasionally I get an email with photos of a tattoo of one of my illustrations. Looking at my work for the rest of your life is about as big a compliment as I can…

ELECTRIC EXPLORATION Damen Yachting unveils its first SeaXplorer with hybrid power and propulsion Expanding on its already successful franchise of adventure-ready explorers, Damen has started building on spec its first SeaXplorer 60. It will be the first SeaXplorer to be equipped with hybrid propulsion and batteries. Like her sisterships, however, this 197ft SeaXplorer will be expedition-ready with a certified helideck and offer all the comforts of a luxury yacht in remote areas, including high latitudes, for up to 30 days. Azure Yacht Design designed the exterior of the new SeaXplorer, while H2 Yacht Design focused on creating a warm interior that doesn’t compete with the scenery. “The functionality of an explorer yacht is quite different from ayacht used in the Med,” says Jonny Horsfield, Hz’s design director. “It’s less about sitting around, and more…

eye opener

After spending 18 months on the shelf thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, No Time to Die is perhaps the most hotly anticipated James Bond film to date. It’s finally showing in cinemas around the world – and Bond has bagged himself a suitably stylish boat for the occasion. Images shared before the film’s release revealed that the super spy would once again be taking to the sea, this time on board a modern classic Spirit 46 sailing yacht (pictured). The famously patriotic British spy would no doubt appreciate that the boat was crafted in the country he serves. All Spirit yachts are custom-designed, with the Spirit 46 showcasing long overhangs, flush decks and a top speed of 18 knots under sail. The yard was also behind 111ft Geist, which was named…
