My obsession with shoes began with a pair of neon-hued PVC pumps. They were my grandma’s, though I find it hard to believe that a cable-knit-sweater-wearing prep would be seen out and about in such flash. I would put them on every day after school, when my sister and I would descend to the basement to play dress-up—piling on vintage costume jewelry, feather boas, and elbow-length satin gloves as we hosted our American Girl dolls for tea.
