best-laid plans can change

My husband and I bailed on the perfect honeymoon. We had carefully planned every detail of our wedding, wanting it to be fun and cool and totally us. Same for our honeymoon. As an East Coaster, I thought Hawaii would be more exotic than beaches to the south. But more important, my preschool teacher honeymooned there; she was the first bride I ever knew. We had booked a super fancy resort, where we relaxed on the beach, had massages, and dressed up for dinner. But after three days, we weren’t sold. It was glamorous and cool but not really us. So in our most spontaneous move ever, we cashed in the rest of our stay and headed to a tiny spot we loved in the Bahamas (for a fraction of the price,…

budget like a pro

Q: What should I look for in a wedding photographer? What’s most important—style or budget?—Ash Costello via Facebook A: Surveys* say the average cost for a wedding photographer is around $3,133 or 6 percent of your budget, but anyone looking at top-level work is in for a shock. For a weekend event, expect to pay a minimum day rate for eight hours of coverage. If your guest list is 200 and up, you may pay more or need a second photographer. So when your budget is tight, it’s best to cut your count or have your wedding on a Thursday, when photographers are more likely to negotiate. Any wedding planner will tell you the same, because the cost of everything will scale down. Think quality versus quantity, especially if you have…

never say never

This year, my fiancé, Mark Brendon Herman, and I are getting married at our favorite place in the world: Harbour Island in the Bahamas. We have the whole weekend planned, from taking our groomsmen out for dinner on Friday after the rehearsal to surprising guests with a tuxedo-clad violinist playing Adele’s “Hello” when they step off the boat for our ceremony at the Other Side resort on Eleuthera. We’ve made sure the Sunday Funday pool party will have plenty of barbecue, burgers, Bloody Marys, and chilled rosé for our loving family and friends. We even created a family crest! And being the thoughtful, organized person he is, Mark has already written his vows. I’ll write mine soon. I have a lot to say. Considering the last few years, when life-changing events…

the zero-drama guide to wedding style

Your search for inspiration starts in 3, 2… “Something blue” was a defining part of my nuptials, thanks to my own obsession. Early on, I zeroed in on my forever-favorite hue for our wedding’s color palette—determined to find a distinct shade that embodied my envisioned summertime country club theme. I considered light blue (too baby), teal (too tropical), and navy (classic, but too dark) before triumphantly selecting a peacock blue—Pantone 315 C, to be painfully exact. However, it was difficult to find in the wild, so I carried around swatches, ready to lecture printer or planner at any sign of a mismatch. My efforts were well-intended but, I now know, misplaced. Experts agree that coming up with a wedding style should begin not by obsessing over a detail but by asking yourself…

why do a wedding mood board?

You May Surprise Yourself Obsessed with blush and gold? Lovely! But that doesn’t mean they will work best with your venue, season, or overall aesthetic. Don’t get color blocked; see what hues emerge naturally. A mood board lets you eyeball choices before committing to any. “It’s a great visual way to brainstorm,” says Robin Verrier, founder of Verry Robin & Co., based in Charlottesville, Virginia. Ideas Feel Real Pinterest allows you to easily gather inspo on your laptop, but a mood board lets you play with textured materials like ribbons, fabrics, or stationery that you can’t appreciate on a screen. “You’re taking ideas and making them tangible,” Verrier says. To that end, look to books or magazines (beyond wedding-related ones), boutiques, museums, and cocktail bars for keepsakes you can pin to your IRL…
