What our esteemed industry colleagues do mean, however, is that customers of the mainstream cars they make the most profit from don’t want manual gearboxes. And they are right. ANYONE WORRIED THAT FERRARI’S declared pursuit of a hybrid future would mean softer cars will welcome its new hypercar. The SF90 Stradale is a range-topping, 986bhp, all-wheel-drive, V8-engined, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that’s Ferrari’s quickest ever road car: it’s quicker than the LaFerrari to 62mph (2.5sec versus 3.0) and around Fiorano too. It marks the first time that the pinnacle of the range has had a V8 engine since the F40 – yet the SF90 is a series production car, not a limited edition, and will not replace any current model. It also takes Ferrari into new territory at a price point of around £400k. ‘THE PUREST, LIGHTEST, MOST DRIVER-focused supercar ever built.’ Bold words, granted, but when they come from the man who designed the McLaren F1, they need to be taken very seriously indeed. Twenty-seven years on from the unveiling of the fabled F1, Gordon Murray is making another hypercar, and this time it’s his name that will be applied to the bodywork. Or rather, that of Gordon Murray Automotive, a sister company to his Gordon Murray Design (GMD) business that is best known for its iStream design and production system. The new car will be called the T.50, and its specification makes us wonder if Murray has been eavesdropping on our watercooler conversations in the evo office. McLAREN HAS REVEALED THE FOURTH model in its ambitious Track25 product expansion plan. Called simply McLaren GT, it’s a grand tourer that picks up where the 570GT left off, and is a response to customer requests for an even more rounded two-seat model – one that combines supercar capabilities with attributes more usually associated with traditional GTs, such as a focus on comfort, on-road useability and increased luggage space. Despite this being an all-new model, underneath the bodywork is the familiar pairing of a carbonfibre tub chassis and a 4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 – but with a suite of changes to suit the GT’s more laid-back character. WE CAN’T YET TELL YOU WHAT THE NEW Focus ST is like to drive – the embargo on driving impressions lifts on 1 July – but a ride in the passenger seat on some seriously challenging roads shows that Ford has a very clear idea of what the new model needs to do if it wants to earn a serious chunk of the fast hatch market. The new ST now has 276bhp, some 29 more than before, making it the most potent ST so far, but this isn’t its most important feature.
