We all love bigger tires, unbreakable axleshafts, lockers, and deep axle gearing, but one of the most common Jeep front axles, the Dana 30, gets a bad rap for being weak. And while it’s no tank in a world of bread trucks (more of a light-duty bread van), with some work the Dana 30 can be used with 33- to 35-inch tires and maybe even cautiously with 37s. Of course, in stock form under heavy throttle attacks, lockers, and heavy rigs off-road, that’s not a great idea. Still, the Jeep Dana 30 can be built to withstand a respectable amount of abuse. It’s a nod to the Special Air Services (SAS) Jeeps that helped win World War II in North Africa. Our idea was to take the theme of these early, lightweight attack 4x4s (that inspired the Rat Patrol television show) and bring the design into the 21st century. Four-wheel-drive vans always have been and always will be rad. With that said, let’s fast-forward past the Russian-built UAZ-452, the Volkswagen Vanagon, and the many others, to March of 1988 where we met the second-of-its-kind Pathfinder GMC Safari conversion. By this point, 4x4 conversions were a common sight with companies like Quigley Motor Company sliding live axles and transfer cases under fullsize vans for purposes of business and pleasure. We had even seen the Dana-engineered V-Drive hit the scene. This system featured a Twin I-Beam-based front suspension as a model, where a Dana 30 differential was added to each beam. Each pumpkin got its power from an output shaft, extending diagonally from a gearbox directly behind the van’s transmission. Recently, I was sauntering through a parking lot trying to remember where I parked my truck and I passed a seemingly nondescript late-model Silverado Crew Cab pickup. It appeared to be bone stock except for one thing. As I walked past it and glanced at the front end I saw a winch mounted to the truck. There were no other visible modifications to the truck. No suspension lift, aftermarket wheels, aggressive tires, or lightbars. Nothin’. This caused me to ponder: Why, it appears, was the owner’s first mod a winch?
