One of the greatest things about the blues is how it remains a touchstone for even the most progressive and visionary guitarists. And few have been as visionary as James Marshall Hendrix. In this issue, 50 years on from the debut of Jimi’s epoch-making album Are You Experienced in 1967, we look back at the seismic impact Jimi made on the London blues scene the previous year and examine how the work of earlier blues guitarists helped to form Jimi’s style. Even at his most cosmic and ‘outthere’, blues was the emotional wellspring of his playing and formed the foundations of his free, expressive playing style. We’ve even dug up Jimi’s original record collection to share with you what Jimi had on his turntable back in the late ’60s. Hopefully, all…

in the making

The sight of these two pioneering blues legends sharing a stage together is perhaps far more significant in retrospect than for those lucky enough to witness it at the Rhode Island festival. Playing on the Friday evening, five years on from his return to performing, House took the stage alone before headliner Muddy Waters and his band. Around halfway through a powerful 12-minute reading of Downhearted Blues with his National resonator that belied his 67 years, he was joined by protégé Waters, contributing lead guitar.…

HRH Blues Festival 15-16 April 02 Academy, Sheffield The third edition of this weekender boasts the strongest line-up of blues we’ve seen for some time in the UK. And it’s one that champions rising talents from home and away. Headliners King King and Ten Years After have earned their reputation as crowd pleasers, but there’s plenty of new generation too. Aaron Keylock has just released his debut Curt Against The Grain, and alongside Laurence Jones they represent the promising young voices of UK blues. Northern Ireland’s Simon McBride, South African Dan Patlansky (pictured) and Finnish blues rock firebrand Erja Lyytinen are also not to be missed. And for some old school British blues values from the glory days, Stan Webb’s Chicken Shack will be on hand. www.hrhblues.com Swanage Blues Festival 3-6 March Swanage The 16th annual festival…

The Fender Custom Shop have unveiled a new Journeyman Relic option for its Custom Shop Eric Clapton Signature Stratocaster (£3,749). The Clapton models have proved to be Fender’s best-selling signature guitar and the Journeyman relic finish on the body and soft V profile neck here gives it the look of a Strat that’s put in its fair share of hours on the road. The new model features a two-piece ash body, a maple rift-sawn neck and three famous Vintage Noiseless Single- Coil Strat pickups. Joe Bonamassa and Derek Trucks are among the nominees for the Blues Foundation’s 38th Blues Music Awards. Bonamassa is nominated in the BB King Entertainer and Instrumentalist (Guitar) categories and the Tedeschi Trucks Band are nominated for Best Band and Blues Rock Album for Let Me Get…

Artists on their unsung blues heroes Chris Whitley’s passing in 2005 from lung cancer at the age of 45 left behind a 25-year musical legacy, but the sense he was tragically unsung. But as Alter Bridge’s Myles Kennedy tells us, he remains a poignant inspiration… “I think what ultimately attracted me to Chris Whitley’s music was the mystery of it. He was able to weave the pragmatic elements of Delta blues with the harmonic dissonance and complexities of Thelonious Monk. Lyrically, he forced me to use my own imagination to discover what he might be saying with his indirect approach. “Dirt Floor proved to be a complete revelation to me. It highlighted the fact that a brilliant album can be recorded in a day without relying on dense production. After nearly 20 years…

teye super coyote £4,320

Teye Guitars is named after the brand’s founder, Teije Wijnterp (aka Teye), whose claim to fame as a guitar player is his association with Joe Ely in the 90s. He started building guitars a decade ago and now aims to produce 150 guitars a year in the company’s new Nashville facility, where it relocated to, from Austin, early in 2016. The Super Coyote is part of a limited run that begun in 2015 at the company’s previous Austin base and, despite its price, comes from the start-up TMF (Teye Music Factory) level. The Artisan models, with hand-engraved plates, are the next ‘level’ up, topped by the very limited Master guitars, which are handmade and engraved by Teye himself. Zemaitis style abounds here: a similar headstock with its curved rear tip; the neck…
