The Wheel Goes ’Round Thank you for the cover story on the Smith & Wesson M19 Carry Comp. It’s great to see a revolver on the cover! I’m a longtime subscriber and even longer-time reader—going back to the Jan Libourel days—so I recognize that my fondness for the wheelgun represents a smaller market demographic. Nonetheless, there’s no denying the many attributes of the revolver even today, and I’m glad to see S&W join Colt and Kimber in providing new models. I also must compliment your fine staff and note that Richard Nance’s “En Garde” column is unfailingly informative and helpful in a real-world sense. D.W. LIVINGSTON ALBUQUERQUE, NM Cowboy Up I am sick and tired of the reader letters criticizing you for reviewing “expensive” guns. I don’t buy car magazines to read about the latest…

adore the madore

IN THE 1970S AND ’80S, FEW IF ANY 1911 handguns were ready for competition. Les Baer and Bill Wilson were yet to come. Some of the finest work ever accomplished on 1911 handguns was the work done by Army gunsmiths between 1918 and 1935, but the best examples were turned out by shops run by craftsmen who mixed art and mechanics. Pennsylvanian George Madore worked on many handguns prior to his death about 15 years ago. Among these were Hammerli 208 handguns and quite a few 1911s. I have seen several 1911 .45s he modified, and the one in my hands is an exceptional example of the gunsmith’s trade. Among his innovations was a tab on the barrel to snug up the barrel fitting. He also figured out a way to mount…

streamlight tlr-6 for sig p365

SIG’s P365 is fast becoming one of the most popular subcompacts on the market, and companies like Streamlight are taking notice. To wit, the firm’s new TLR-6 light/laser specifically designed for the P365. It’s just the right size for the pistol at 2.2 inches long by about 0.75 inch wide. Weight is a just a touch over an ounce. And there’s a ton of power in that small package: 100 lumens/2,000 candela of white light, which is cast in a nicely even, wide beam; and a red laser. Installation is a snap. Simply remove three screws with the furnished Allen wrench and clamshell the TLR-6 around the trigger guard and the relief cuts on the frame. The two supplied CR-1/3N batteries can be installed without removing the light/laser. Operation is simple, too. Momentary-on…

intel report

The 2019 HODGDON BASIC MANUAL is out! It features more than 8,000 loads for handgun, rifle and shotgun built with the firm’s powders: Hodgdon, IMR and Winchester. It includes powder burn-rate charts, and of particular interest to handgunners are new data for Winchester 244 WinClean Ball. You can find this handy reference at Hodgdon dealers or order it at HODGDON.COM for $2.58 (shipping included). Rest in peace, BOB SHELL . A frequent contributor to “Speedloads,” Bob passed away in February. Regular readers will know his specialty was obsolete guns and obsolete ammunition, and he was a whiz at figuring out how to create safe, shootable rounds for cartridges that have long passed into obscurity. I met him only once, but we communicated a lot, and he was a pleasure to work…
