a clear look into the future

It’s almost 11 a.m. after all, and I wouldn’t want to spoil my predinner appetizers. Just another of the many pitfalls encountered while working at home during a pandemic: 1) Reduced will power. 2) Weight gain. 3) Relying on a cat for column ideas. One thing has become certain in these trying times: Nothing is certain. While I would like to offer some inspirational words to comfort my fellow car enthusiasts… well, you might as well talk to the cat. So instead, I consulted with an Automotive Futurist who was listed in the Supernatural Services section of the Hemmings classifieds. (It’s usually located somewhere between Stanley Steamer Fluid Wanted and Swedish Language Books and Literature.) For a detailed fortune telling, the Automotive Futurist charges the equivalent of that TIG welder I’ve been eyeing, so…

quarantine projects

Nothing prepared us for the current turn of events that has transformed our lives beyond anything we could have ever conceived, even as recently as Super Bowl weekend. But as they say, “when life hands you lemons, make lemonade.” So, what better time to do all those projects that you’ve been putting off for, let’s say, the last 10 years? Fortunately, for my wife and I, two weeks before our daily lives came to a virtual standstill, we drove to Hobby Lobby in Holyoke, Massachusetts, to buy some arts and crafts stuff she needed. I bought two 27 x 39-inch frames and the appropriate backing material to mount several automotive prints that I hadn’t gotten around to framing—it wasn’t 10 years that I’d put off this project, but actually 30 years. Back…

I am a longtime subscriber and receive every magazine that you publish. I have a question about an article you published in the April edition of HMN. On page 34, in “Shades of LA Noir,” the writer uses the term “gow job.” I am not familiar with this phrase, and like most of your faithful readers would appreciate it if you would publish what it means. Jerry Brittain Statesville, North Carolina The term “hot rod” largely didn’t exist before World War II, and until the late 1940s it was almost entirely pejorative. Early rodders like Ed Iskenderian and Robert Stack used the term “gow job” (rhymes with “cow”) instead. Its origins are disputed, and some people point to “gow” as an early slang term for various drugs used to dope race horses. The fact that…

EVENT NEWS Coronavirus 2020 The COVID-19 crisis has upended the collector-car world, postponing events, temporarily closing businesses, and curtailing many person-to-person transactions. The Henry Ford Museum joined the ranks of car museums nationwide that closed their doors to the public during the pandemic to help slow the spread of the virus. The organization’s website, www.thehenryford.org, announced it would remain closed until May 31 as of press time, but visitors should check before making summer plans. The New York International Auto Show in New York City, which has become the epicenter of the crisis, was postponed until August 28-September 6. The show normally takes place in April and 2020 marks the 120th running. This year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, has been cancelled and will be held in June 2021. As of…

1960 oldsmobile super 88 holiday sportsedan

Imagine gliding down the Interstate in a 1960 Oldsmobile Super 88 Holiday SportSedan while surrounded by standard amenities, such as a “Fashion-Flair” interior with plush fabric and Moroceen upholstery on thick foam padded “Custom Lounge” seats, “Star-Lite” headliner with bright bows, “Safety-Padded” instrument panel, “Deep-Twist” carpeting, courtesy lamps, two-speed wipers, parking brake signal lamp, and De Luxe door handles, window cranks, and armrests, plus more. While gripping the De Luxe “Safety-Vee” steering wheel, you could scan the “Twin-Cove” instrument panel’s “Safety Spectrum” speedometer and its colored band indicator that’s green at low speed, turns amber (some say orange) at 35 mph, and red at 65 mph. You could also survey the lanes ahead and the roadsides through the “Vista-Panoramic” windshield and the side windows. And when checking the rearview mirror to…
