make a statement with steel

Made for display A neglected steel-and-recycled-wood shelf unit was rescued from a second-hand store by Ilze and Johann Niehaus of Pretoria. They removed a bit of rust from the steel with sandpaper and then applied a primer followed by matte black enamel paint. The wooden shelves were sanded and sealed with Dulux Woodgard Rubbol. The pair decided to use the shelf in their yard to display a selection of potted plants; it stands in front of a gorgeous tickey creeper next to the door that leads out from their living room. Best of all, the unit has wheels which makes it easy to relocate. In black and white Owner Riaan Pienaar transformed the façade of this home when converting it into a guesthouse, House of Pinardt, in Robertson in the Western Cape. He wanted a…

structural solutions

The problem Serious drainage problems in their undercover braai area compelled the owners of this house in Rondebosch, Cape Town to redo their garden. Since the adjoining properties are higher than theirs, their stoep, backyard and garage regularly became flooded whenever it rained. Ironically, though, good rainfall was a scarcity in the Western Cape up until last year and this resulted in another problem: the ongoing drought had left their large, unstructured garden in tatters. The homeowners dreamt of beautiful structures, waterwise plants and minimal maintenance. And like many Cape Town residents, they were keen to install water tanks to harvest as much rainwater as possible. Last, but certainly not least, was a promise to hubby that he could get a fire pit for his 60th birthday. This was the ideal opportunity to…

work and play

Karen and Steve Jossel always dreamt of having their own sustainable vegetable garden. When they swapped the ever-expanding Bantry Bay in Cape Town for the small Overberg town of Greyton in 2015, they finally had the luxury of space to realise this dream. While quite content with the established country garden that came with the house they’d bought, it was when they purchased the neglected plot next door that their vegetable garden could really take shape. The adjoining plot had a small building on it that was used as the Greyton gym, but the land was dry and sandy and nothing would grow there,” explains Karen. “We wanted to turn it into something really special.” Thanks to this extra space, their property now spans almost 3 500m² and in addition to creating…

1,2,3 fixed!

Many homes have a Wendy house that started life as a backyard storage space for all sorts of odds and ends but soon degenerated into a ‘junk room’. This was certainly the case at reader Annelie Carstens’ Durbanville home, where three teams battled it out on Home’s reality show 1,2,3 Fix It! on DSTV channel VIA in a competition to prove their renovation mettle. In this instance, her cluttered storage space became a treasure chest for the competitors to delve into. Annelie’s home was one of 600 that were considered for the TV series, sponsored by BUCO and Timbercity. All three teams worked makeover wonders with their clever ideas; meticulous planning; plenty of blood, sweat and tears – and a bunch of discarded items rescued from Annelie’s Wendy house and garden. The orange team,…

train a tree

[CHOOSE THE RIGHT TREE] Apple or pear trees are good specimens if you’d like to espalier a fruit tree, as both bear their fruits on short stems – which is exactly what you need! An espaliered tree should never bear its fruit on long branches. Pear trees, particularly Packhams, are ideal as they easily make side shoots. In addition, pear trees live for up to 75 years – and more – which is ideal, as they age beautifully with knots on the trunks adding character. Other good choices are fig, plum and quince trees. Peach trees, which only live for 15–18 years, are not a good long-term choice. Espaliering is a slow process and you certainly don’t want a tree dying on you just as it reaches perfection. HOW TO ESPALIER A TREE It’s…
