Yip, a month. A reader from Panama, Este de Nysschen, was planning a visit to South Africa and because we had already communicated via email so many times, I decided to meet her for coffee. She is Afrikaans-speaking but was looking for back issues of Home as she wanted to take them back to Panama to share with others. I was happy to give them to her and we agreed to meet. But she’d said April and I mistakenly thought our appointment was for March – so there I was, on my own. It was early autumn and the seasons had turned. Sitting in that coffee shop in Mouille Point where we’d agreed to meet, I felt the chill of the sea breeze through my clothes. It was a grey day. The…

WINNING LETTER Brought back to life Rita Fruhstorfer of Jo’burg writes I bought my property many years ago with a beautiful thorn tree in the garden. Over the years, the tree grew large; I loved hearing the birds and watching them build their nests in it each season. A few years back, we installed solar panels on our roof and, unfortunately, the tree prevented proper sunlight absorption. We cut it back at first but it just grew larger. Sadly, we had no alternative but to cut the tree down to a stump. We moved the bird feeders to our other trees to keep as much bird life as possible, but the remaining stump looked dull. I wanted to do something with it and after much pondering I came up with the idea of…

green & gold

On the shelf A shelf made from white American ash and simple black brackets installed underneath the monochrome gallery in Craig’s passage adds texture and life to an otherwise flat display. The beautiful lilies and delicious monster leaves in white ceramic vases combined with a pop of gold in the ceramic bunnies echoes the green and gold décor theme throughout the house. Oh, the drama! We featured Craig Olckers’ Observatory home in our March 2018 issue and although he has since moved to another temporary home, the décor is equally impressive! A bespoke grey in his new sitting room is the perfect backdrop for a warm, dramatic scheme of luxurious emerald-green with hints of gold. Craig chose not to paint the wall grey all the way to the ceiling to allow for a…

we love our barn home!

The Grobbelaars and their pooches settled on their family farm near Paarl 25 years ago and moved into one of the original storehouses. Not that this meant living among farm implements – the structure had already been transformed into a comfortable three-bedroom home in the 1960s. Back then, it was fashionable to use a variety of paint colours throughout your home, so the couple painted their walls in everything from navy-blue to lime-green. Over time, however, the hues became more muted and with the addition of two children, the storehouse became too cramped – the time was ripe for building an extension. And, as is typical of farm construction, the work progressed at a snail’s pace as their plans changed constantly and new ideas were conceptualised. “Actually, it all developed organically,”…
