editor's letter

“We want to be ‘in’ by Christmas,” is a phrase we often hear on the Homebuilding team when talking to readers about their projects. However, the flip-side is that too many of us have the same idea and we find ourselves jostling for trades or rushing our projects towards the end of the year. I should have known better, perhaps, but I too have found myself working to this deadline — hurtling along to ensure I have at least one ‘good room’ in which to…

spotlight on...

Amy Reeves is Editorial Assistant and the writer behind many of our readers’ homes features. She recently started renovating a ‘mature’ property… “My partner and I recently moved into a detached 50s house in Shropshire. To say it is not to everyone’s taste is potentially an understatement, as many friends and family get a certain look on their faces as we eagerly show off the 70s turquiose bathroom suite and the imposing red brick/black mortar fireplace – complete with beaten copper hood – but we are loving living here. As I’m sure many in this parish can attest, organising trades at the moment has been a bit of a nightmare and I’m quickly learning the incredible value of a good recommendation when you’re new to an area as we are, but it’s…

a happy home

The survey from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) sought to understand the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on homeowners and how this has affected the way we live and work at home. Almost half the surveyed homeowners (40%) said they plan to include environment-enhancing design features like increased natural daylight, energy efficiency and better soundproofing. Many more will be extending to add space (20%); creating a home office (17%); or renovating with a view to more open-plan living (14%).…

self-build & renovation

One in three wants to self-build One in three people are interested in designing and building their own home, but for many the lack of finance is putting their dreams on hold, according to research carried out by the National Custom and Self Build Association (NaCSBA). A keen 9% are seriously considering a self-build — nearly double the amount of homes that are custom or self-built each year. The demographic most likely to say they want to self-build is 18-24 year-olds, with nearly half that group interested, and across all age groups building in energy efficiency and future-proofing are seen as key reasons for taking the self-build route. 66% of UK adults agree that lots of natural light is essential to creating their ‘perfect home’, according to new research by Pilkington UK. Nearly…
