I have enormous admiration for the craft spirits movement—and judging by all the craft acquisitions of recent years, the big spirits players seem to agree. But there’s something about brands that have stood the test of time and navigated the shifting sands of generational trends that impresses me more. So many of our Blue Chip spirits brands have been around for decades—and some for centuries. Yet somehow they never lose their mojo and continue to win over drinkers, year in and year out. Molson Coors Looks Beyond Beer…. Molson Coors president and CEO Gavin Hattersley has unveiled a “revitalization plan” aimed at improving performance at the company, which posted net sales down 2% to $2.8 billion and EBITDA down 5.6% to $703 million for its third quarter ended in September. Among Hattersley’s key objectives is pursuing growth in above-premium labels while diversifying into new product categories—such as the recently launched Movo canned wine spritzers and La Colombe Hard Cold Brew Coffee RTD—and evaluating potential bolt-on acquisitions. Baker’s Bourbon Beam Suntory has revamped Baker’s Bourbon, keeping its 7-year minimum age statement and proof, but switching the whiskey to a single barrel bottling. The 53.5% abv Bourbon ($60 a 750-ml.) has new packaging featuring the specific age of the barrel, the barreling date, and the warehouse where it aged.
