how we’ve missed them

THERE ARE FEW bands on this planet that get people excited like Slipknot. Even two decades on from that incendiary debut, there’s still just something about them, isn’t there? That crackle of electricity. A lingering touch of danger. The sense that at any moment it could (and, at points, has) all come flying off the rails. Fresh off the back of showing Download why they remain Donington’s premier house band, the Nine (and, despite recent controversies, it does very much still seem to be nine) are preparing to finally unleash We Are Not Your Kind onto the world. And if you’re expecting Slipknot to be a well-oiled, corporate PR machine at this point: think again. We sat down with Corey, Mick, Jim and Sid for a no-holds-barred (and occasionally spiky)…

meet the band

DAVELING WRITER A Hammer legend, Dave has interviewed more rock icons than he’s seen Crystal Palace matches (er, maybe), but he’s all about new acts, too, so he’s been chatting to OTT power metal heroes Majestica. Face it, with that name, they’re never gonna be playing dubstep. CHRISTIMA WENIG WRITER Our favourite underground correspondent in Berlin (er, OK, our only underground correspondent in Berlin), this month Christina reviews the new album from the divine Lingua Ignota. Rumour has it she also loves RuPaul’s Drag Race. Don’t tell anyone. RICH HOBSON WRITER We get so many pitches from Rich we should probably rename him Pitch Hobson. Ha ha! Isn’t that great #banter?! No, seriously though, Rich, please don’t stop; it was your idea to do the excellent Rock In Rio piece you wrote for us this…

glasto keeps it heavy

“GLASTONBURY, IT’S GREATto see you all here!” bellowed Joe Duplantier to a packed field of bemused passers-by, curious onlookers and, yes, shit-tons of diehard metalheads who’d made the trek to Glastonbury this year. “It means a lot to us to be able to come and play somewhere like this. Thank you!” France’s biggest metal export were one of the latest confirmations that Europe’s biggest festival is embracing heavy music more than ever, with the likes of Venom Prison, Employed To Serve, Entombed A.D., Babymetal and Bring Me The Horizon amongst the names performing at Worthy Farm last month. Still, it was the Frenchmen who undoubtedly stole the show, stunning the Truth Stage with a tight and devastatingly heavy hour’s worth of juddering, emotional metal. Cannibal Corpse for 2020, yeah?…

“we’re going to demolish that place”

JUST BEFORE WALKING through London’s 10,000-strong Alexandra Palace crowd for the triumphant final date of their first earth-shattering, eyebrow-singing UK arena run, Parkway Drive recorded a video with Bloodstock director Vicky Hungerford, announcing that they would be the 2019 festival’s Saturday night headliners. While everyone who witnessed the tour unanimously accepted the band’s ascension to a place on the metal table, the inevitable trickle of vitriol that emerged from those who deemed them not worthy to fit their respective criteria quickly turned into an outright storm of indignation. However, having stored the spinning drumkit and flammables away for their recent US run with Killswitch Engage, frontman Winston McCall is more concerned with reacquainting himself with the band’s colossal stage show and avoiding being flambéd onstage than the opinions of a vocal…

10 things we learned this month

What’s been on our minds this month DAVE MUSTAINE IS A FIGHTER As Hammer went to press, news had broken that Dave is battling throat cancer. Everyone at Hammer is sending strength and positivity Dave’s way. MUD IS NOT METAL… We should have known we’d pay for the last two years of sunshine at Download. …BUT IT DOESN’T MATTER It didn’t stop Slipknot, Slayer, Tool et al bringing the fucking house down, did it?! WE’RE READY FOR BLOODSTOCK And on that note… roll on the most metal festival of the year! DON’T MESS WITH TILL LINDEMANN We’re just saying, he’s always looked like he can pack a punch. ANDRÉ MATOS AND NATURE GRIP Our community suffered two great losses this month. Brazilian metal legend André Matos and Tengger Cavalry’s Nature Ganganbaigal will be sorely missed. Crank some Angra and Tengger Cavalry today. 3…
