i’ve never got my head around tool

GROWING UP AS a nu metal kid, they were a band whose methodical, expansive, experimental noise felt like it belonged on a whole other plane of existence to the no-nonsense, bouncy anthems I was immersing myself in in the early 00s. When I finally came round to them, it opened my eyes (and ears) to a brave new world. Even then, though, I felt like I could never really get to grips with the four people that make up this most enigmatic of metal bands. There’s a reason their first album in 13 years feels like a world-shaking event; you never know exactly what to expect from Tool – the band or the people – and when we were granted an exclusive audience with them for this blockbuster cover feature, we…

meet the band

ELEANOR GOODMAN DEPUTY EDITOR This month El got to tick off a bucketlister by writing a Tool cover feature. “After seeing their epic show in Berlin and at Download, it was exciting to finally ask them everything we wanted to know,” she says. She sure as hell didn’t waste the opportunity! JUSTIN BORUCKI PHOTOGRAPHER Hammer’s own Jon Bon Jovi (well, he’s from New Jersey) hopped in a car and drove 160 miles north to Woodstock, New York this month, where he got to catch a rare sighting of a metalcore frontman in its natural habitat. Check out the results on page 48. ALEX DELLER WRITER When he’s not pitching us tons of killer new bands to stuff in our ears – exhibit A: his New Noise piece on Spotlights – Alex is pitching us features with heroes like…

metal at war

METAL’S GLOBAL IMPACT and importance has rarely been better underlined than when Jake Shuker, frontman of Syrian death metallers Maysaloon, was invited to perform a special set at London’s Imperial War Museum last month. The set was put on as a part of the IWM’s Rebel Sounds exhibition, designed to highlight musicians across the decades who have faced persecution for their art. “Back in Syria, we used to perform with fighter jets conducting airstrikes above our heads. Playing the same music at the museum, beneath all the military aircraft on display, made me feel like I was still living the war, but in a different place and with different people. It felt very real,” says Jake of the experience. For more info on the Rebel Sounds exhibition, head to www.iwm.org.uk…

dungeon masters

“THIS IS NOT A POPPY RECORD!” IN CELEBRATION OF their mysterious ninth album, Black Anima, Italian goth metallers Lacuna Coil are bringing their newest studio venture to the spookiest venue they could find: the London Dungeon. For one night only, supported by Metal Hammer, a few lucky fans will join the band to experience the dungeons first-hand and hear the record in the creepiest atmosphere possible. The songs that have become Black Anima did not come easily to the mischievous Milanese, who have been working on the album ever since the dust settled on 2016’s Delirium, vocalist Andrea Ferro tells Hammer. “We started seriously writing about six months ago, but we were struggling with inspiration before that. We tried to sit down and write but it’s not something you can force: you either…
