wec unveils condensed 2021 calendar

The World Endurance Championship has unveiled a shortened six-round provisional calendar for the 2021 season, with the winter format used in recent years ditched. The roster has two rounds fewer than the ongoing 2019-20 itinerary, and this in response to the economic difficulties associated with Covid-19. It is the shortest calendar since the WEC started in 2012. The season kicks off with the 1000 Miles of Sebring in March as well as contains a July visit to Monza, which was on the original 2020-21 calendar revealed late last year. Le Mans is on June 12-13. WEC CEO Gerard Neveu said: “We listened to our manufacturers, teams and partners and responded with a calendar featuring fewer events than in the past to allow them all time to deal with the current economic crisis. We…

schumacher extends f2 points lead after fruitful sochi weekend

Mick Schumacher has extended his Formula 2 points lead after taking a win and third place in the Russian round at Sochi. In the feature race, Prema Racing’s Schumacher ran second behind poleman Yuki Tsunoda of Carlin, then passed at two-thirds distance on the exit of Turn 2 after selling a dummy. Callum Ilott also passed Tsunoda, but Schumacher pulled clear to win while Ilott was repassed by Tsunoda on the final tour. The following day’s sprint race was only five laps’long after not being restarted following a Jack Aitken and Luca Ghiotto crash. Guanyu Zhou scored his first F2 win while Schumacher finished third after a stunning start from eighth put him fourth and he later passed Aitken. Ilott finished seventh. Schumacher leads Ilott by 22 points with four races left. However…

pembrey criticises welsh government after 2020 racing programme ditched

Pembrey circuit has criticised the Welsh Government after the venue abandoned its remaining 2020 race programme amid the country’s ongoing Covid-19 restrictions. The Welsh circuit has not held a competitive race meeting this year and, amid a worsening Covid picture, it has cancelled its three remaining 2020 events: a BTRA truck meeting plus two motorcycle gatherings. Pembrey’s circuit director Phil Davies told Motorsport News: “There was no way that we were going to get any headway with the Welsh Government and their regulations, and with everything clamping down more locally as well, so we decided to pull everything apart from our private midweek testing. “We’ve been non-competitive for a lot longer than we should have been in my opinion. When the virus was very low in Wales he [the First Minister] should have…

devine focused on banking points as european championship resumes

Callum Devine will have a new Hyundai i20 R5 following his high-speed roll on Rally Liepaja and a new co-driver too for this week’s Rally Fafe Montelongo. The PCRS team readied a new car with Devine’s crashed i20 damaged beyond repair, while James Fulton joins the team with Devine’s regular co-driver Brian Hoy unable to travel for work reasons. After retiring from the opening two rounds of the European championship, Devine accepts he needs points rather than plaudits in Portugal. “We had a bad start to the season with some bad luck in Rome and everybody knows we had a bit of an accident in Latvia,” said Devine. “It means we’ve got zero points at the moment so we need to build on our speed throughout the weekend, that has to be the…

rallying in scotland sidelined amid three cancellations

The latest Covid-19 guidelines from the Scottish Government have halted the return of Scottish rallying, with three events already called off and potentially more to follow. The Memorial Garden Stages at Condor Airfield, Arbroath, was supposed to run last weekend (September 26) but was cancelled a week beforehand. It had initially been changed to a time trial event to get around the issues of dual occupancy of a car, but clerk of the course Tom Matthews told MN “there wasn’t really much appetite” for that from competitors. He added: “To be honest we’ve had them cancelled before but this time I was gutted because we had a really, really big entry and it was quite a competitive entry.Any one of about 15 could have won it.” MN understands that SportScotland – Scotland’s national…
