the people you don’t meet

OTHER THAN THE ABILITY TO PLAY WITH, DRIVE, AND WRITE ABOUT CARS FOR A LIVING, this job also has the perk of meeting significant people in the automotive industry—some of them famous and many more not as well known. Lee Iacocca was certainly part of the former category. As a kid of the 1970s and 1980s, especially the ’80s, I “knew” Iacocca from his television commercials hawking Chrysler K-cars and minivans, and from the credit he earned for saving Chrysler from certain bankruptcy. It was only later that I learned of his Mustang and Ford connections. In the mid-1980s, my hot-rodding–obsessed mind dug the hell out of the fact that he got his buddy Carroll Shelby to build cars for Chrysler, taking the god-awful Dodge Omni and putting his spin on…

our next week to wicked is coming november 18, 2019!

It’s one crazy week of long hours and hard work, but we know our readers and followers love to see a complete car come to life in just five days, so we’re doing it once again this November in our Santa Ana, California, tech center! Our first Week to Wicked build featured a ’66 Mustang hardtop that we converted from a docile inline-six driver to a pavement-pounding, corner-carving, fuel-injected 363ci small-block that made over 500 hp. We followed that July ’17 build with a ’13 Mustang GT back in January ’18 that received a Roush Performance supercharger, full suspension, and more. Then came our big project in July ’18 with a coupe-to-fastback conversion using all-new sheetmetal from Golden Star, powered by the latest “Gen 3” 5.0L Coyote crate engine from…

carlisle ford nationals breaks event record

The first weekend in June is like a pilgrimage of sorts for Ford enthusiasts. For over 20 years Ford fans from all over the world have converged on the Carlisle, Pennsylvania, fairgrounds to attend the Carlisle Ford Nationals, part of the Carlisle Events series. We’ve attended many of them over the last 25 years and have watched as the hobby changed, grew, and was challenged through economic downturns. However, the 2019 event was a record-breaker, showing just how strong interest is right now. The National Parts Depot show field held 3,196 cars! They were literally stuffed into every available spot/corner the parking crew could find. The weather was great this year, which certainly helped with breaking the attendance record as well, with nearly 60,000 guests coming through the gates. Even…
