The photograph on page 86 of this issue, of a very nice Morris Minor at the Canterbury All British Day, brought back fond childhood memories. My father was not a ‘car’ person by any stretch of the imagination, but he did have a liking for Morris Minors. The first Morris Minor that I can recall him buying was an early low-light model. From memory, it was a two-door, and wore a rather nasty dent on one of the rear mudguards — which didn’t deter my father one little bit, as he never bothered to have it repaired. While the name may have changed, the focus of the event remains the same — to bring together New Zealand’s cornerstone clubs, members, volunteers, cars, sponsors, and a good number of visitors to enjoy our shared passion. The 2018 Ellerslie Classic Car Show unofficially kicked off on the Saturday with the annual Meguiar’s Classic Car Tours d’Elegance, hosted by the MG Car Club Auckland Centre, beginning at a number of locations in the greater Auckland region and ultimately converging on the Vellenoweth Green in Saint Heliers. The Masters Class is open to all car-club members. It comprises individual entries, limited to six cars for each club. These cars are among the finest restored vehicles you will find anywhere. The calibre of entrants in the Masters Class this year was once again at the level we’ve come to expect of this event, which draws enthusiasts from around the country. Two stunning vehicles battled it out to take out the top prize. Harald Decker’s beautiful 190 SL was up against the 1969 Mach 1 Mustang belonging to John Hellens. Both cars are testament to the work done by the restorers and owners. The hotly contested Teams Event — generally limited to eight teams — is judged to the same rules as the Masters Class. Each club entry consists of two cars — clubs can enter more than one team — and the winning team earns the right to host the following year’s event. With nine teams entered this year, it was always going to be close. Fortunately, the teams of judges were able to perform their duties under cover as they methodically worked their way through their areas of expertise. survivors class

The criteria for the Survivors Class are quite simple: eligible vehicles are those which are predominantly original, unrestored, and not modified in any way — in other words, they’re ‘survivors’. This year’s winning car was ruled out of the 2017 Survivors event as it didn’t comply with the rule of having a current WOF and registration. The rectification of this issue for the 2018 competition saw the Studebaker storm home. With its speedometer at under 120 miles — that is not a misprint; this car has fewer than 120 miles on the clock, and the plastic is on the seats as if to prove it — beating this old American classic was going to be a tall order. Australian motor racing legend Peter Brock claimed that the Torana was the greatest touring car he had driven in his 40-year career, and he drove some potent machinery in Australia and Europe. Holden’s 1978 Holden Dealer Team (HDT) Torana A9X won three championships in three years, was on pole position at all Bathurst events it was entered in, and won twice at the ‘Great Race’. It defined the 1970s Australian muscle car — along with the Ford Falcon GT ‘Shaker’ — and, when driven by Brock, our own Jim Richards, and John Harvey at HDT, it absolutely humbled the opposition.
