During the course of doing my job as editor of this magazine, I’m very rarely at a loss for words. However, one such occasion happened recently, during the photo shoot of John Murray’s magnificent 1964 Oldsmobile 442 that’s featured in this issue, when I was shown a box of items that came with the car when John purchased it from the US. Among the many items, which included original sales documents, owners protection plan and protect-o-plate, and various sales brochures — none of which is particularly rare — one item caught my attention. XK70 — CELEBRATING 70 YEARS OF XK JAGUAR MODELS It is 70 years since the gleaming power unit that was the first Jaguar XK engine produced went on display in the XK120 at Earls Court Motor Show. This milestone was marked in style by the Jaguar XK Club of England at its XK70 celebrations in June. A number of famous venues, such as the British Motor Museum and the Jaguar Collection at Gaydon, Warwickshire, were included as daily visits. Notable Jaguar drivers who attended the XK70 celebrations were Peter Sargent, Peter Sutcliffe, and Richard Attwood. I recently purchased the latest copy of New Zealand Classic Car magazine (August 2018, Issue No. 332) and was taken back a bit by the story on Bruce McLaren and his Jaguar cars, and the mention of the 1959 Mark 2 3.8-litre Jaguar. This is a car I remember with great fondness — I remember when Ron Riley owned the beautiful maroon Jaguar with wire wheels and the cream (beige seats). The car was always in concours condition, and always very clean and tidy. I was lucky enough to have several rides in the car — Ron would take a few of us boys off to our Saturday soccer games in it, and it was always a privilege to be able to ride in it. Thank you for keeping turning out a splendid magazine. I would just like to offer some comments on the ’51 Ford article in the September issue [No. 333]. The commentary states “These models were assembled in the US, Canada, and some even in Australia — it is likely that most of those that found their way here came from Australia.” Actually, the 1951 Ford Custom Fordor was also assembled at Ford New Zealand’s plant at Seaview, Lower Hutt. The CKD (completely knocked down) packs were sourced from Ford Canada, as they could supply right-hand-drive [RHD] versions. From memory, I think four packs of 48 — 192 in total — were imported. Ford Canada and GM [General Motors] Canada stopped producing RHD vehicles in the 1960s. Due to the restrictive import licensing, the car…
