winning superbird

Rumbling south down the descending terraces of Dunedin’s Blackhead Road, with an impressive sea vista in the distance, is the right way to picture yourself cruising in this big American classic. The invitation to do just that in one of these rare and distinctive cars came to me from Dunedin collector Gary McNeill. TThe eye-catching orange and black colour scheme, the jaw-dropping wing, plus the sheer size of the car draw many curious looks. The wide sloping bonnet goes on forever and disappears from sight. Nascar Superbird driver Richard Petty was always worried about hitting the cars in front during a race and had a mechanic stand at the front to get a gauge on it. Also known as the Mercedes-Benz ‘W113’, the SL series was a clean-sheet design for a new decade, the cars casting a magic spell over men and women alike — a spell that lingers even half a century after the famed German car manufacturer first premiered the 230 SL at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963. When it comes to racing car marques, the name ‘Cooper’ is intertwined with motor sport in this part of the world. Names such as McLaren, Hulme, and Amon have all been associated with the Cooper brand. Even Chris Amon, more famously associated with other marques, drove a Cooper works car at one stage. Jack Brabham won two of his Formula 1 (F1) World Championship titles driving a Cooper, and there was a time here when no local motor racing grid was complete without a gaggle of them. before… and after

It was great to see the restored MGA coupe featured in your October issue [No. 346]. This actual car was my first car, purchased in October 1967 from Syd Jensen Motors in Palmerston North. The photo shows the car in its original MGA Powder Blue parked outside my parents’ home in Levin, on the day I got it. The car was sold new in Timaru in December 1958 and had a number of well-known owners and dealers in New Zealand including Shelly Motors, George Palmer, Syd Jensen (twice), and an ebullient Dutchman, Johan ‘Hans’ Holler, who was a leading light in the Wellington MG Car Club of the early 1960s. I recall as a teenager seeing Hans sprint the car at the Levin circuit. I believe it was him who…
