I have thought about it from time to time, but I struggled to answer when put on the spot. Dutch Volkswagen importer Ben Pon visited the VW factory on Wednesday, 23 April 1947, when it was still controlled by the British Occupational Forces under the command of Major Ivan Hirst, a British Army officer and engineer assigned to rebuild Volkswagen after the war. Pon wanted to talk about importing Volkswagens into the Netherlands, but it was a special day because he did something else. He took out his notebook and drew an oblong transport vehicle. New Zealand Classic Car is not exactly going out on a limb here but we have to say this is one of the most beautiful car shapes ever created. The lead designer was Wilhelm Hofmeister, BMW’s head of design from 1955 to 1970 — he of the ‘Hofmeister kink’. That label is applied to the distinctive curve at the base of the C-pillar that has been a signature of BMWs ever since Herr Hoff introduced BMW’s Neue Klasse cars.
