hello,

Happy New Year! January is such an exciting time to be a vegan, as another Veganuary campaign kicks off, and thousands of people decide to try a plantbased diet for a month. If you’re one of those people, congratulations! You’ve started an amazing journey, and we hope that you’ll take us along for the ride. At PlantBased, we’ve always been keen to show people that going vegan doesn’t have to be intimidating, or even that difficult. uk’s first vegan poke bar opens

Bournemouth’s Hoke Poke (hokepoke.co.uk) has become the first plant-based poke bar to open in the UK. The new vegan food option is from the team behind Plant Hustler, and the poke bar is situated in a food truck on the premises. Poke is a native Hawaiian dish that traditionally contains seafood: salmon, prawns, tuna and more. But as more and more people seek to replace animal products in their diets, vegan poke bowls have increased in popularity, and Hoke Poke has developed plant-based replicas of the seafood items to make sure nobody misses out. Acknowledging its role as one of the world’s largest food providers, furniture giant IKEA has announced its intention to ensure that 50 per cent of main meals offered in restaurants will be plant-based. IKEA restaurants will be…

tell me more about… nutritional yeast

Nutritional yeast is often referred to by vegans as ‘nooch’; it’s cheesy and nutty in flavour, and extremely popular! It’s an inactive form of the yeast we use in bread and beer; the yeast cells are deactivated through heat-treating. Most often sold as flakes (and sometimes called ‘yeast flakes’), it’s perfect for sprinkling on stews, soups, casseroles, and salads. Nutritional yeast is packed with goodness – it’s a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids, and it also contains many B vitamins, and trace minerals such as manganese, selenium and zinc. When buying nutritional yeast, opt for a fortified version, to which B12 has been added.…

wimpy unveils new vegan burger

High street restaurant Wimpy (wimpy.uk.com) is trialling its first ever vegan burger. Originally launched for a limited period to coincide with World Vegan Month, the company has announced that the burger will be available until the end of January in line with Veganuary. Wimpy has installed separate grills and cooking utensils to avoid any cross-contamination with meat products. The Beyond Meat® patty is served in a vegan brioche bun with lettuce, tomato, red onion and vegan mayonnaise. During the trial period, the burger will be on menus in 85 per cent of Wimpy’s branches, for table service and takeaway. The company has confirmed that it could be a permanent addition to menus if the trial goes well.…
