The IFP has launched an online petition in protest of the recent 18.65% tariff hike granted to Eskom by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa). The petition, which can be accessed at actnow.ifp.org.za, will run until mid-March. The IFP will then present the petition – on behalf of all signatories – to Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, President Ramaphosa and Nersa. We will request that in addition to reversing the proposed April 2023 price hike, no further increases will be granted to Eskom until load shedding is permanently suspended. President Cyril Ramaphosa says he has ordered a skills audit of all government departments in the public service. Five years ago, Ramaphosa announced plans to introduce lifestyle audits for members of the Cabinet and public servants when he ascended to the Union Buildings but these have been stalled. Ramaphosa said he had given the departments nine months to do the audit. “We are taking steps to professionalise the public service across all spheres, to ensure the right people are in the right positions, that they are held accountable, and that they are empowered to provide the best possible service to the people,” he said. An eThekwini Municipality protection officer driving a city vehicle, was among three men arrested in Dassenhoek last week. KwaZulu-Natal provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said police officers from the Provincial Vehicle and Trio Task Team made the arrests on February 16 after conducting an operation. She said the men were suspected of being involved in a robbery. Gwala said members of the community became suspicious and informed the police after they spotted men driving around the KwaNdengezi area over a period of two days. The Judicial Inspectorate of Prisons is mooting a bail-funding scheme for prisoners who cannot afford to pay bail of less than R1 000 because of their financial circumstances. NUSA DUA: Indonesian authorities repatriated alleged drug trafficker Antonio Strangio, an Italian and Australian dual national who was detained in Bali earlier this month, to Italy yesterday, authorities said. Crime experts have raised concerns after third-quarter crime statistics released by Police Minister Bheki Cele on Friday revealed that the Inanda, uMlazi and KwaMashu police stations were among those in the country which had recorded high numbers of murders and rapes. In the period from October 1 to December 31 last year, Inanda police station recorded 87 murders and 83 rapes, KwaMashu police station 56 murders, and uMlazi police station 51 murders and 71 rapes. In the province as a whole, all major crime categories saw increases, with murder up by 8.3%, rape up by 13.3% and hijackings up by 19.8%. Three people were stoned to death after the body of an 8-year-old girl was found inside a pit toilet at Senotlelo in Vaalbank, Mpumalanga. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said Nomsa Sambo was reported missing by her family at the Vaalbank police station on February 12. “Thereafter, information emerged about a man who was allegedly seen carrying Nomsa to his house. More than 65 000 meters across eThekwini Municipality have not been read for more than a year. Opposition parties said some residents who had been paying estimated bills had found themselves owing large amounts when their meters were read. A report tabled before the municipality’s finance committee recently detailed the extent of the problem when it came to reading water and electricity meters. It showed that there were more than 12 000 electricity meters and 53 341 water meters that had not been read for 365 days, with the result being that bills were being estimated for extended periods. I am heartbroken because of the current situation in Zimbabwe, particularly the educational sector, where our golden treasures have been reduced to the extent that it sounds like you are cursed to be a teacher. The Zimbabwean government has failed the teachers and forgotten that the future is in their hands. Most of the teachers are teaching for the sake of the little money they are being offered by the current government. Zimbabwean teachers are really behind not because of a lack of knowledge, but because the government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa has failed to provide the necessary equipment to them. A life sentence has been handed to a 38-year-old man who harassed his ex-girlfriend and eventually murdered her in October 2021, despite a protection order she had against him. The Madadeni Regional Court handed down the sentence to Thokoza Maxwell Ndlovu on Friday. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said: “Prior to the incident, the couple were in an intimate relationship. Ndlovu had paid lobola. “He and Phindile Misi Thwala lived together and Thwala suffered physical and financial abuse. Denel Land Systems was correct in firing one of its managers for the sexual harassment of a woman working in his department, the Labour Court has said. It turned down an application by the former senior officer, only identified as Mr N, to have the ruling made by an arbitrator in this regard reviewed and set aside. The court confirmed the ruling made in arbitration, where it was found that the dismissal was both procedurally and substantively fair. A junior employee who worked in Mr N’s department claimed that he had on multiple occasions asked her on dates, which she politely rebuffed. The DNA backlog, which was initially more than 241 000, is now at 1 600, Police Minister Bheki Cele has said. Cele said this was a 99.3% reduction in the country’s DNA backlog figures. The uMlalazi Local Municipality mayor Theodorah Xulu on Saturday launched a gender-based violence (GBV) programme called #PhefumulaNdoda (breathe men). The municipality said GBV cases had escalated in the area and this prompted the mayor to establish a programme aimed at listening to men on why they commit gender-based crimes. However, during the programme, some men came forward to speak about the abuse they faced. According to the uMlalazi Local Municipality spokesperson Nonhlanhla Jele, one of the GBV victims was allegedly repeatedly beaten by his wife, an SAPS police officer. ISLAMABAD: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will give a 27% discount to students travelling to China to pursue academic degrees, a PIA official has said. The PIA first announced 22% fare reductions for students in December last year to assist students flying to China. A customer care official at the PIA’s official helpline said the price of a regular ticket from Islamabad to Beijing is 272 000 Pakistani rupees (about R18 846), and the students can avail discounts on it. The US held joint air exercises bilaterally with South Korea and Japan involving strategic bombers yesterday, a day after North Korea fired a Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in a “sudden launching drill”.
