SOUTH Africa’s middle-distance Olympic champion Caster Semenya was discriminated against after not being afforded “sufficient procedural safeguards” when challenging World Athletics regulations that effectively forced her off the running track. There is no science in blaming climate change for flood disasters, as eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda would have us believe (The Mercury, July 10), because the blame for those disasters lies with the ANC for failing to uphold the science of town planning and urban development. Climate change is a natural, historic phenomenon unrelated to human activities. The most extreme weather in KwaZulu-Natal took place on May 31-June 1, 1905, when fossil fuel development was in its infancy. The European Central Bank (ECB) launched a survey this week asking citizens to weigh in on the redesign of euro banknotes, with rivers, birds and European culture among the shortlisted themes. “We want Europeans to identify with the design of euro banknotes, which is why they will play an active role in selecting the new theme,” ECB president Christine Lagarde said. Widespread corruption in the form of complicity by officials has been identified as a key challenge in addressing all transnational crime, including human trafficking. At least two National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) prosecutors, police officers and an acting judge have been implicated in related crimes. This is according to this year’s Trafficking in Persons Report by the US Department of State, which provides a comprehensive overview of the state of human trafficking around the world and the tools being used to stop it. For those not enjoying the colder weather conditions, the South African Weather Service (Saws) said most places should become warmer by tomorrow. The country, including Durban, has been gripped by cold temperatures following snowfall in Gauteng and parts of the Drakensberg on Monday. However, Saws forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobelo said conditions were expected to change by tomorrow throughout the country, with maximum temperatures reaching the mid-twenties. JAKARTA: Indonesia’s coast guard said yesterday it had seized an Iranian-flagged supertanker suspected of involvement in the illegal trans-shipment of crude oil. The MT Arman 114 was carrying 272 569 metric tons of light crude oil, valued at 4.6 trillion rupia, when it was seized last week, the Indonesian authorities said. The supertanker was captured after being seen in Indonesia’s North Natuna Sea, carrying out a ship-to-ship oil transfer with the Cameroon-flagged MT S Tinos on Friday. KwaZulu-Natal water issues will now be handled by the uMngeni-uThukela Water board, an entity that came into existence this month. There are growing calls for legislation that will ensure the stability of local governments in the coalition era of South African politics. Since 2016, local governments around the country have seen numerous changes in mayors and senior managers in municipalities, which has negatively affected service delivery. ALUMINIUM semi-fabricator Hulamin faces an indefinite strike at its KwaZulu-Natal operations as its 1 800 workers downed tools. Workers want an increase in the company’s medical aid contribution and for contributions to the Pension Fund to be equalised and to be settled separate from salary negotiations. The medical aid contributions are currently capped at 40% by the employer with the workers contributing the balance. THE KwaZulu-Natal police have established a task team to investigate the truck attack incidents taking place in the province after two freight trucks were set alight on the N2 between Enseleni and Empangeni on Monday night. WHILE the Auditor-General, Tsakani Maluleke, has painted a gloomy picture of municipalities around the country, her management reports regarding the state of the municipalities will remain under wraps. This is according to the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria, which recently turned down an application by public interest group Sakeliga for the AG to make these reports public. Judge Jan Swanepoel found that the management reports prepared by the AG are not “reports’’ as defined by the Constitution. The judge said the AG was thus not under a constitutional obligation to make the management reports public. Newcastle Municipality has settled its electricity arrears debt with the power utility Eskom. The municipality settled the massive debt with a payment of R127.4m on July 5, ahead of the August 15 deadline. Eskom spokesperson Joyce Zingoni said that the state-owned power utility welcomed the settling of the debt. “Eskom is grateful for the thorough and professional way the municipality has conducted itself during the tenure of the debt.” Zingoni said the payment marked a significant milestone for Eskom, the Newcastle Municipality, the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) and the KwaZulu-Natal treasury. Zulu nationalism has to be understood from its colonial context A few years after Mangosuthu Buthelezi led the African natives in the Colony of Natal to a quasi- independent state called KwaZulu, the coastal province descended into a low-scale civil war that pitted his Inkatha Ye Nkululeko Yesizwe (now the IFP) and the then-exiled African National Congress (ANC) against one another. TOKYO: Japan’s Supreme Court ruled yesterday that restricting a transgender woman’s use of toilets at her workplace was “unacceptable”. The ruling comes after a law to promote understanding of the LGBT community. An official at the economy ministry who was assigned male at birth sued because she was only allowed to use women’s toilets several floors away from her office.
